Grateful for the engaging virtual speaking event with Comerica Bank. Thank you so much for invite me to speak at event Tricia Dublin.? ? I really enjoyed the questions from both women and their allies. ? In particular, I enjoyed the question from the executive event sponsor Dharmesh Patel about?how?he can champion women in the company. This prompted a great conversation in particular about “resisting the fix.” I have observed both men and women leaders invertedly disempower women by jumping in to take over?when?they face challenges: Women: We put on our capes and want to play superhero.---?“Don’t worry, I will do that for you.” Men: Jump straight from listening to action and problem solving.?---“Well, have you tried…..” ? Both of these are well intentioned but have the unintended consequences of frustrating employees. ? The solution? Clarify what the employee?really wants and needs from their manager.?After 20-years of marriage, my husband and I have negotiated the?“Is this a listening or solutioning conversation?”?question, so we respect each other’s needs. (Feel free to steal it and use something like this with your own relationships both at work and home.???) ? We had the privilege of guiding the People and Performance leadership team #HereAtKraftHeinz through a custom leadership seminar this week. Through exploration of text, self, and team, this specially krafted Seminar examined the imperative of leadership found at the intersection of values, responsibility, and trust. Over 2 immersive days, the team explored countless questions across 6 sessions of focus: -- How do we think about power and how we use it? What is the balance between authority and care? -- How can we forge deeper bonds of trust in our teams? What kind of behaviors do we want to model to foster trust? -- How do we balance decisiveness and the inclusion of additional information and other viewpoints? -- What are the barriers to courage and how might we overcome them? What are the convictions that ground our decisions? -- What are the competing demands upon our leadership in a polarized society as we balance economic realities and social aspirations? -- How do we sustain ourselves and others in complex circumstances and under great pressure?
