It was a treat to meet Christopher Voss
He was my inspiration to pursue negotiation studies which has helped me start any business anywhere in the world.
Most of us know Chris’s usual strategies, I’ll share 2 key learnings for me.
As an entrepreneur, by default, I don’t give up. I pursue what I believe in, specially if there is value to be created for all parties.
But, our counterparts may not always have the same understanding. This can be frustrating.
For weeks, I’ve struggled with a situation where my counterpart’s ways stand in the way of moving our conversations forward. Whenever I asked for an open discussion to resolve roadblocks and understand his position, I got a clear no.
It hurts because I believe, there is always a solution and in this case, it would have been great to reach that solution. I really wanted this one to go through.
2 things I learnt-
1) not all agreements can be concluded (one can’t clap with one hand).
2) when our counterpart becomes non cooperative, bringing them back will highly likely be by agreeing to their terms, and not a joint solution to achieve value for both.
My personal belief- There needs to be respect and equality in all relationships. Yes, bargaining positions can differ but openness and courage to discuss is the basis.
So, I wait for this counterpart to reach out and remain open for the discussions to start again. And till then, I conserve my energy and spend it on building cool stuff as I always do :-) if it doesn’t happen, atleast I tried and learnt.
Thanks HBS and Chris for a fine evening.
On October 6th, we experienced something truly exceptional.
In an exclusive fireside chat, Christopher Voss, CEO of The Black Swan Group and former FBI hostage negotiator, revealed powerful negotiation strategies. With Abdulla M. Alashram guiding the discussion, the session offered practical approaches that reshape how we handle complex business situations.
Stay tuned for more insightful events that bring together top leaders and fresh perspectives.
