Just logged off the Society of Vascular Surgeons Annual Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) summit. Here’s what stood out: - Removing barriers to equitable care at all levels of practice. - Promoting leadership diversity in current and future generations of vascular surgeons. - Adapting strategies to enact meaningful change within current political climates. I was reminded today how powerful a vision can be when it’s built for something greater than oneself. A few days ago, I had jotted down a note to find people to meet at Sankara Eye Foundation USA. Yesterday, by sheer chance, I ended up meeting K (Sri) Sridharan for a completely unrelated reason. It wasn’t until we sat down that I realized he’s the co-founder of Sankara Eye Foundation USA. Talk about serendipity! This morning, I was chatting with Rajesh about how "whatever is meant to happen will happen," and this meeting felt like one of those moments of affirmation. With little idea of what it would become, Sridhar, his wife, Neighbour and Murali started Sankara in 1998, inspired by their relative’s wish to give the gift of vision. Fast forward 26 years, and Sankara Eye Foundation has provided 350,000 free eye surgeries this year alone, with an ambitious vision to reach 1 million by 2030. We spent 3 hours talking, and I was struck by how their vision has grown into something so much larger than themselves. When your vision is big enough, the world notices—and people want to be part of it. This meeting made me reflect on how many ideas never leave the desk. But when they do, and they’re rooted in something bigger than a business goal, they truly have the power to change lives. Sridhar’s journey is a testament to that. It’s funny how the most meaningful conversations often happen when you least expect them.
