As the short days of January take their toll many are thinking about booking holidays abroad. But what if you have overseas assets? I am currently going through the process of applying for my sons first British passport. From my research you just need to send the UK Passport Office some documents and they'll send you the passport. Great, How difficult can that be? Surprisingly very difficult. Actually, extremely difficult. And costly. Now if you are not familiar with the UK Passport Office they have what they call Case Handlers who assess the application and decide what is required from the applicant to get a passport. However, at no point can the applicant speak to the Case Handler and they must always speak to the call centre. An inverse relationship is the call centre are brilliant because the Case Handlers are so bad. Almost like a wife apologising for a husband whos drank too much. So, despite having my sons birth certificate, my birth certificate, my wife birth certificate, my fathers birth certificate, my mothers birth certificate, my wedding certificate, my passport, my wife passport, three documents from the health authorities, a utility bill, my sons Italian ID card - I am currently preparing the next tranche of documents they've requested but with the very believable fear that no matter I send them what they ask for they will want more..... Which is genuinely a horrible feeling. But it did get me thinking how many times organisations make decisions that make sense to them but not to their customers and it is the poor customer service teams who take the hit in trying to justify what is happening. How many times have you upped prices with no increase in quality or reduced service with no explanation? How many of these decisions would be made if the decision makers had to wear the headsets themselves and take the call from the customers? If you cannot easily explain your actions to your customers in a way they can easily understand then you have too many layers and probably need to break up some echo chambers. Meanwhile, I'll be trying to get my sons fingerprints, under a full moon, witnessed by a wizard, certified by unicorn and translated by a Babel fish to satisfy the Case Handlers latest demands.
