I always say that my horse is my therapist. My time at the barn is my salvation. For the non-horsey crowd, it’s hard to understand why we horse-obsessed folks feel the way we do. This list kinda sums it up. I’d also like to think that many of these attributes are found in the work we do at StrategyHorse as well. I am not a therapist, but the unique way in which we approach management consulting definitely incorporates EQ, empathy, and moral support in the form of straight-talk and proven tactics. #law #lawyers #lawfirms #management #horses

At some point, most attorneys will be faced with the decision to move from lone-wolf mode to becoming a team player. If you've done this recently, or are in the midst of it now, you'll understand what a big leap you're considering. Check out what Krista L. Mitzel, entrepreneur and business-savvy employment defense lawyer, decides on this front — and how she came to her conclusion in the to-scale-or-not-to-scale debate. My recent experience hiring attorneys for Athena Legal Solutions LLC has once again made me realize that things don't always have to be the way you "thought" they needed to be. Let me explain. When I started to explore going to law school—midway into what was already my second career—I thought there were only two options for me: working at a firm where I'd bill oodles of hours a month (something I knew I did NOT want to do) and work as an in-house counsel for a large organization (which I wound up doing). It was only a few years into my in-house journey that I asked myself, again: "There's got to be another option here, right? And there was: Athena. But I had to build it myself. I was ready for it. As I started talking to people I was interviewing—mostly women—I realized that they wanted another option, too. Attorneys who wanted to practice law AND have flexibility in their workdays and be present for their families. Lawyers who didn't want to spend every waking hour working or keeping track of billable hours. People who cared more about who they were serving and why than climbing any sort of corporate ladder. Sappy as it sounds, I'm happy that I'm able to be that option for others. When you build a business based on your own values and what you want, you'll attract the right people. And that's been one of the most satisfying lessons about entrepreneurship. #Entrepreneurship #SmallBusinessOwner #SmallBusinessLawyer

If you're a successful private practice attorney you probably set the bar very high for yourself. What happens when you hit that bar? Do you stop for a moment and recognize your accomplishment? If you're like most of us, you probably just keep going. If we don't celebrate and measure our successes it's like they never happened, and this is what paves the path to burnout...or worse. Set goals. Reach goals. Recognize and celebrate success. Rinse and repeat. #lawyers #law #lawyersoflinkedin #worklifebalance #success

About two months ago, I opened up my own personal injury law firm. Here are four real lessons that I've learned since then: 1?? It's scary, but mostly because it's new, not because you're unprepared. Taking the leap into the unknown is daunting, but if you're thinking of opening up your own firm it's likely because you already have the skills and experience to do so. Trust in your abilities and know that you're more than capable of learning to do the rest. 2?? You will find a whole community wanting to see you succeed and offering their support. The legal community and your personal network are filled with people ready to lend a hand, offer advice, and cheer you on. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them for help and and connect with others who are on the same path as you. There's strength in community. 3?? You will fail. It's inevitable and only a setback if you don't learn something from it. Mistakes and failures are part of the growth process. It may sound cony but each setback really is an opportunity to learn, adapt, and come back better. 4?? You will have way more roles than just "attorney." You are now attorney, office manager, human resource officer, rainmaker, CFO, marketing director, etc. Learn to delegate and, if possible, hire outside help for all the things that will steal too much of your time from the things that actually bring in money. Starting your own firm can be a scary and, at times, overwhelming challenge. But it is incredibly rewarding to finally be in full control of your future and the future of your own firm. If any other attorneys have any advice, please share in the comments! #LawFirm #PersonalInjuryLaw #Entrepreneurship #LegalCommunity #BusinessGrowth

This may sound jarring. You may think it isn't true. But the truth is. Successful lawyers should be happy at work. If you are a successful partner, you should only be sleeping on your computer next to a half-eaten slice of pizza if you want to be. As a rainmaker, you call the shots: but if you are at the wrong firm, it can feel like you are pushing water up a hill with one hand tied behind your back.? The right firm, however, can give you wings. #lawfirm #lateralmove #attorneylife #success #lateralpartner #balancedlawyer #rainmaker

My business model isn’t about maximizing profits. It’s about building the ideal personal injury law firm that can get the best results for clients and provide the best service. In an industry where the temptation to maximize profits by increasing volume is high, I take a different approach. I believe that true advocacy means keeping manageable caseloads, ensuring that every client gets the attention and resources they deserve. It’s not about squeezing out the most profit from each corner of my law firm—it’s about doing what is right for the client, no matter the time or effort required. This philosophy extends to how I staff cases and compensate my team. By investing in my employees and creating an environment where we can give each case the attention it demands, we’re able to deliver results that make a real difference in our clients’ lives. Building the ideal personal injury law firm isn’t about profit margins—it’s about people. And that’s what motivates me and my team every day.
