New paper Data Center Flexibility by Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners (SIP) presents a call to action for all stakeholders in the AI and energy sectors. For utilities to both serve the increase in demand and maintain reliable supply, a new approach to interconnection is necessary, says SIP. They identify two sources of data center flexibility: 1) dispatching on-site battery storage to support the grid, and 2) IT load flexibility where model owners/users can defer when they run their training models, the most energy-intensive part of AI compute, to avoid peak load windows Whether they use 1, 2 or a combination of both, a challenge for data centers will be assuring utilities that they'll reliably curtail when they need to - seems like this will require guidance from a regulator.
