28 Women have been murdered to violence since 2024, that is more than 1 per week. What Were You Wearing? - Australia National Rally has been created by individuals across every state/city in Australia as a response to this national emergency. I personally have been spending multiple hours before and after work organising the Sydney and Canberra rallies, as well as resources and logistics at a national level. All people working on this project are unpaid/volunteer and want to see real change be made within our government, systems and communities. We want these rallies to be as safe and as effective as possible, and unfortunately to do so certain things cost money. Due to this we have collectively agreed on making a Go Fund Me page to ask the community for help. Where will your donation be going? - making these as inclusive as possible including paid Welcome to Country, AUSLAN interpreters, accessibility aids, etc - extra security as we are very conscious of recent events and how many people (especially women) are feeling right now. - volunteer resources such as high-vis vests, sunscreen, flyers and more. We are not funded by the government and all donations we receive go to our healing groups and other services. WWYW are not funded by the government and all our donations and profits go to providing services for victim-survivors of SA. The Paris Olympics 2024 was a remarkable event, showcasing the spirit of unity, sportsmanship, and global collaboration. From record-breaking performances to unforgettable moments of athletic excellence, it was a true celebration of what we can achieve together. However, we must also talk about a serious issue that came up during the games. There was a reported 30% increase in human trafficking activities, especially in commercial sexual exploitation, during the Olympics. Even with efforts to stop it, traffickers found ways to take advantage of the large crowds and increased demand. At Rahab's Daughters, we were there to protect those most at risk. This experience reminded us of the ongoing need to fight against trafficking, not just during global events but every day. While it’s crucial to stop trafficking, it’s equally important to support those who have been affected—helping them move beyond the trauma and start living a normal life again. In Indiana, we are running a safehouse where survivors can rebuild their lives with dignity and hope. I love football but it has a dark side. 1 in 4 women are subjected to domestic abuse in their lifetime and at least one woman a week is killed by their abuser. And this increases during big international football tournaments. One study has shown a rise of up to 38% in cases of domestic abuse after football matches. Euro 2024 starts today. The tournament will last for four weeks and is taking place in Germany. The Women's Aid charity supports victims of domestic violence. Visits to the Women's Aid website increased 26.1% during the 2022 World Cup and it's likely this will be the same for this tournament. We can we all play a part in helping to reduce domestic violence: ?? We can be mindful of the people around us who may be at risk. ?? We can be aware of the signs of domestic abuse. ?? We can learn about the helpful and useful things to say when people are experiencing domestic abuse ?? We can signpost for support where appropriate. ?? Where my ribbon skirt art meets activism through the dialogue the art facilitates. The ribbon skirts I created for this raffle are explicit acts of resistance and solidarity. For me, this can be highlighted by the scenario of asking someone to not wear a ribbon skirt, which is unethical and would hopefully make the enforcer uncomfortable in their actions. National Ribbon Skirt day was actually established in what is currently Canada in response to this. Assented in 2022, the act’s preamble reads in part: ??“Whereas the ribbon skirt represents a direct connection to Mother Earth and its sacred medicines; ??“Whereas Indigenous culture, tradition and ceremony, including Indigenous ties to language and the land, are critical to the vitality and well-being of Canada’s First Peoples;” ??“Whereas section 1 of Article 15 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, to which Canada is a signatory, states, “Indigenous peoples have the right to the dignity and diversity of their cultures, traditions, histories and aspirations which shall be appropriately reflected in education and public information”; My right to wear a ribbon skirt is increasingly being recognized and protected in what is currently Canada; however, Palestinans and allies are being attacked for and denied their Indigenous clothing or regalia, resulting in lost employment and accolades; psychological, spiritual, and emotional harm; and even death. Creating a ribbon skirt that honours our interconnectedness with Palestinians is a way to navigate the hypocrisy I’m witnessing. It’s Euros Season ???????????????? which means 3 things: 1: Everyone saying it’s coming home ?????????????? (I’ll come back to this if we really did manage to bring it home) 2: Domestic violence cases are currently soaring. Research by Kirby et al., 2013, found that, “The early evidence is clear – there is a correlation between domestic violence and football. Researchers have observed that the number of domestic abuse reports rose by 26% when the English national team won or drew and increased by 38% when the national team lost” 3: Racism cases are also soaring. Research by Kick it Out found, “Looking at the football season between January 2019 – December 2019, 30% said they'd witnessed racist comments or chants at a football match and a staggering 71% of those questioned also said they had witnessed racist comments on social media directed at a footballer.” Whilst this season is one which is fun and full of games (literally) it is extremely important to recognise the dark side of the games and its potential impact on those around us. As fashion brands profit off of branded tshirts, kits and all the gear, maybe they should consider making donations of each sale of each piece to domestic abuse charities such as Womens Aid and charities which help support victims of racism such as Kick It Out. Bringing awareness to DV and racism alike are both so extremely important, especially during times of celebrating diversity and talent. What are your thoughts? ?? This is such an important topic, and something we all play a role in changing. In addition to supporting Women’s Aid (which is hugely important and much needed!!) we need to look the roots of perpetration. Poet Len Pennie describes it succinctly when she says ‘look through your people and recheck your friends list, we all know a victim, but don’t know the rapist’… this is true also of domestic abuse. We can’t fight what we can’t name, and it starts by talking about it with the people we know. We need more men to talk to their male friends about this. Why not start with a conversation with your mates during the Euros about the horrifying increase in abuse, and how men can help stop that from happening?
