A simple tactic to encourage 'sustainable' behaviour at events ?? An easy thing to do is to use a mix of incentives and disincentives to nudge event attendees towards better choices. Incentives: Bring a reusable cup and get 50p off your coffee ? Disincentives: Add £2 for high carbon impact menu items, with proceeds funding environmental initiatives ?? It’s really interesting to see how small actions can equal big behavioural shifts. The key is to test what resonates most with your audience and adapt accordingly. Week 166: Running/Planning Events Give Aways If you’re someone involved in planning events, this week's post is for you. (And if you’re not, but know someone who is, please send this along.) Consider what giveaways you stock up on. Consider not only the usefulness of the swag, but where it comes from, what quality it is, and will people keep it? I know that when purchasing company swag for an event there are usually two main goals: 1) Buy things that are cheap 2) Buy things that people will keep and use after the conference so that they will remember your company. I understand that the sustainability angle makes it a touch more difficult to keep these giveaways within budget, but let’s pivot to the importance of point number 2. Wouldn't you rather potential clients/patients/etc. walk away with a quality product that they can use, reuse, and continue to remember your company with? A quality giveaway, and a useful giveaway leaves a lasting, and better impression on these potential clients. Consider how bad it is to have these potential clients walk away from conferences and when they go through their bag they realize they never really needed what they took, so they throw it out - or they did need it so they used it and it breaks after a day. While there’s an ideal message I’m trying to relay of “give out sustainable products,” if that’s not in your budget I would suggest, at least, putting more thought into a giveaway that won’t end up in the trash within a week of the conference.
