Today is Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) Awareness Day, a cause deeply personal to me. ?? Type 1 #diabetes affects over 1.6 million Americans, including approximately 200,000 children and adolescents. While it requires relentless management, not everyone has equal access to the resources they need. Health disparities are a critical issue: Black and Hispanic communities face higher rates of diabetes-related complications due to systemic inequities in healthcare access. Individuals without insurance or in underserved areas often struggle to afford insulin or obtain life-saving technology like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs). It’s time to address these gaps. We need greater advocacy for affordable insulin, equitable healthcare access, and increased funding for research to support all individuals living with T1D. Together, we can create change. Let’s work toward a future where every person affected by T1D has the tools and care they need to thrive. Thank you #Dr.Janine Sanchez, director of #pediatric diabetes for UHealth, for all that you do in #diabetes #research related to #T1D children. Wear blue in solidarity?? #Type1DiabetesAwareness #T1DCommunity #HealthEquity #DiabetesAdvocacy #HopeForACure #Uhealth #Diabetesresearchinstitute #aidensheros #Diabetesambassador #Breakthrought1D #JDRF #T1D #UMiami

Let's talk diabetes! More than 350,000 children and teens have a diagnosis of diabetes in the United States. I remember as a new CCLS that I would see 1-5 new diabetic patients per week and just 5 years into my career saw that increase to 5-10 new diabetic patients per week. Just like any new chronic diagnosis, there are so many psychosocial ramifications involved, and thus, child life specialists often work very closely with this population of patients when newly diagnosed. There is so much that happens in those first few days of admission (education, frequent pokes, physical monitoring, dietary changes, IV infusions, etc.) Unfortunately, it is not common for outpatient health care facilities to have child life specialists on staff to follow up and continue psychosocial support services to pediatric diabetic patients after their initial new diagnosis admission. There is so much that happens AFTER they leave the hospital -- adapting to frequent pokes, coping and emotional processing, learning body signals and signs for low/high blood sugar, building independence with care, care compliance, transition back to school, self-esteem issues, adapting to a glucose monitor or insulin pump, diet compliance, and so much more! These next few months, we are going to be focusing on this specific pediatric population that we know is in need of continuity of child life care! Follow along to learn more about diabetes and how children with diabetes can be supported through a new diagnosis and beyond to promote resilience and emotional-wellbeing! #diabetes #type1 #type2 #type1diabetes #type2diabetes #pediatricdiabetes #diabetesmom #type1community #type2community #parentsupport #parenttips #childlife #outpatientpediatriccare

Last year, Adhera Health presented the results of our preliminary study on the Adhera Caring Digital Program for family caregivers of children with type 1 diabetes at the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) 83rd Scientific Sessions in San Diego. The initial study showed significant reductions in stress levels and depression among caregivers using Adhera Caring. The final study indicated that caregiver wellbeing was significantly correlated with their children's wellbeing, underscoring the importance of considering the whole family unit when managing #peditricchronicconditions. The ADA event was an extremely valuable experience for Adhera Health, leading to a connection with Dr. Jennifer Raymond from Children’s Hospital LA. Dr. Raymond and her team in the Pediatric Endocrinology department at CHLA are now collaborating with Adhera Health on our The National Institutes of Health / National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) - sponsored program to reduce health inequality for the U.S. Latinx population by adapting our Adhera Caring digital companion program for families dealing with pediatric chronic conditions such as Type 1 Diabetes, Obesity, and MS. We look forward to presenting the final findings of our NIH/NIMHD program at next year’s ADA. #AdheraHealth #DiabetesCare #CaregiverSupport #PediatricHealth #ChronicConditions #MentalHealth #FamilyWellbeing #HealthEquity #LatinxHealth #Type1Diabetes #Obesity #MultipleSclerosis #HealthcareInnovation #NIH #NIMHD #ADASCientificSessions #ChildrensHospitalLA #HealthTechnology #PatientCare #FamilyHealth

? We know that Adverse Childhood Experiences ("ACES") are related to many health events across the lifespan - how can clinicians integrate use of ACES and conversations around them into practice? Recent draft recommendations continue to emphasize diet lectures for children with obesity, while overlooking other treatment options. ?? Yoni Freedhoff, a leading voice in obesity management, calls out this approach as another example of weight bias. By solely focusing on diet and ignoring medical interventions, we're indirectly teaching our kids that their weight issues are a result of their actions alone. This is not only misleading but also adds to the stigma they face. Let's stand together in advocating for a change in how we address childhood obesity. Our kids deserve empathy, support, and access to all available health resources. #ChildhoodObesityAwareness #HealthEquality #BeyondDietAndExercise https://ow.ly/N3xY50QsVbE

The extreme cost of maternal morbidities to our healthcare and society – tallied at $32.3 billion - combined with the significant lack of knowledge surrounding these morbidities spotlights the need for (1) providing expectant and new moms with holistic, engaging education on warning signs and symptoms, (2) guiding moms in how to self-advocate to their clinicians, and (3) gathering real-world evidence about awareness, time of occurrence, treatment, and more. We can only advance solutions with real-world data and we can only access the data by connecting with moms throughout their pregnancies, postpartum period and child's early life. #reducingmaternalmorbidities #maternalhealth #stopmaternalmortality #wecandobetter #indicatehealth https://lnkd.in/dhzbitSm

GIRFT’s national report for #diabetes?(2020) highlighted variation in the provision of transition #services to help young people living with #diabetes move out of paediatric and into adult care. This can result in young adults losing touch with their type 1 diabetes service, resulting in poorer #outcomes and I have seen first hand how poor #diabetic care can result in #lifechanging #disability so I hope this initiative will address the #transition of young people into #adult #diabetic #services https://lnkd.in/eKCbgUbF
