Day of Mentorship and Inspiration at?Tapestry??? Yesterday, our mentees from the L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program had the privilege of visiting Tapestry, where they were warmly welcomed by the company’s ERG group, Juntos Unidos. This unique experience gave our young women a firsthand look into the world of fashion, business, and corporate culture. The day was filled with incredible opportunities—from shadowing Tapestry team members to participating in mentorship sessions with industry professionals. Our mentees gained valuable insights into various career paths, leadership skills, and the power of networking. Beyond the professional exposure, they were also inspired by the stories and journeys of the passionate individuals at Tapestry who shared how they navigated their own careers. A huge thank you to Juntos Unidos and the Tapestry team for opening their doors and investing their time in our mentees’ futures. As a daughter of immigrants, being the first in my family to navigate the education system, higher ed and the white collar work force made me super adaptable to changing environments. As being the only women of color in the room became a common thing, and my mentors along the way made that path so much smoother for me. People like Professor Megan Ybarra, Professor Jonneke Koomen, Dr. Maria Teresa Chavez-Haroldson, Ph.D., Shelli Romero, MPA, OPMCP, Reyna Lopez and Susan Boreliz are influential people that helped me see the power in being rooted in my culture and not be afraid to lead. Here are some my favorite leadership lessons that have been top of mind for me recently: 1. Servant leadership is about leading with the heart and working with people that bring you joy 2. Overcoming hurdles makes you more stronger and capable 3. Challenges don’t define us but how we respond, does 4. Be innovative in your approach, steadfast in your values? Our co-founder Luz (Luz M. Reyna) has relied on a handful of mentors who supported her as a first-generation college student and as a professional. "Being a young women of color in the workplace came with many realizations, one of which was that I can't do this alone. I turned to my mentor for help in navigating workplace dynamics, refining my leadership skills and feeling validated. Once I gained confidence, my mentor helped me look to the future and figure out what I wanted to do next." Calling Summer Campers!!!! Camp Emily's Way (CEW) is a transformative 1-week overnight summer camp experience designed to empower 7th & 8th grade black and Latin X girls. CEW focuses on nurturing the whole person by instilling values and life skills that will allow them to unlock their potential. Campers will participate in leadership development and STEM activities, community service projects, and wilderness adventures - pushing themselves both mentally and physically while also learning the importance of sisterhood, integrity, resilience, self-awareness, and determination. Our goal is to plant seeds of confidence at a pivotal time in their development so they can recognize what they desire in life and feel equipped with the tools to go after their dreams. Led by women West Point graduates and current women cadets, girls will build communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and emotional intelligence. Speakers will share their stories and provide inspiration. Our holistic approach combines personal growth with academic enrichment and college preparedness. This week is Pride Week, and it got me thinking — animals don't need a special week to celebrate diversity. It's just a natural part of life for them! Take albatrosses, for example. These magnificent seabirds form bonds for life, returning to the same place year after year to raise their young. And these lifelong partnerships aren’t always male-female; in one breeding area, 31% of the pairs are lesbian. Penguins are another example. Same-sex penguin pairs often form strong bonds and raise chicks together. It’s a beautiful reminder that love and partnership come in all shapes and forms. Nature shows us that diversity is the norm, not the exception.
