Last week, the City Council unanimously approved a motion authorizing city departments to negotiate the purchase of a privately owned parking lot on Grand and 11th (a signature corner in our district), for the purpose of creating a new urban park. Read about it in the Los Angeles Times... https://lnkd.in/gsUtpZXM There are some projects in economic development that are kept secret and require us to sign nondisclosure agreements. And we give them code names like "Bobby Axelrod" (Trader Joes is definitely coming) or "Optimus Prime" (that mall is becoming an Amazon distribution center). And then there are projects that we talk about everyday, with anyone that will hear us, because otherwise they don't happen. We dream about them, and we create them out of whole cloth. New urban parks and public spaces, are almost always entirely the latter. Creating a new and significant public space for the South Park neighborhood was the community's dream, before it was mine. I'm grateful my board trusted me when I said "I got this". And we're as close as we've ever been to getting this! Thank you Councilmember, Kevin de León, City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson and Nate Hayward for shepherding this motion through the process, and your continued efforts to see this through. Thank you Thomas Curwen and Los Angeles Times for amplifying our efforts to get this done! We need to continue to breathe life into this incredible project. We have incredible partners waiting in the wings and willing to help us develop this space ahead of LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games. Whether at the back pushing, or in the front leading, I'm looking forward to doing my part to get this done!
