When it comes to showing recognition for the good work people do, bigger isn't always better. Sure, accolades and awards can be great. But have you ever had someone tell you how grateful they are for you? No spot lights. No LinkedIn post. No blasting it on the company email chain. Just one-on-one, Telling someone how special they are. Now that's something people never forget. You see, Many managers think showing recognition has to be this big public occasion. They'll go through all the trouble to show recognition, But won't take the little step to thank someone privately. Here's a groundbreaking thought ... do both! I recently made a mistake when celebrating a great month in our company.? We blew away our goal and I wanted to recognize our team. Instead of just congratulating our team for their great accomplishment, I threw in the dreaded "but" at the end of it. "but, next month will most likely be much different." There was no need for me to do this.? I intended to shield them from a possible letdown the following month since we always have a strong January. The "but" was not necessary at that time (and probably not at all). Celebrate your wins.? Recognize the success of your team - the other stuff can wait. A well-informed team already knows of the challenges that may lie ahead and is prepared to handle them. Let celebrating your wins stand on its own.? Do not dilute what your team accomplished. Interestingly, February came and they beat our target for that month as well.....and did it again in March.

?? Why don’t we celebrate our successes more? Does this sound familiar? When you make a mistake, you overanalyze it a hundred times, but when something goes well, you just shrug it off and rush to the next task? ?? No matter how big or small a success is, it’s important to pause, celebrate, and truly take in the moment. I’m not just talking about the big wins, but the smaller ones too. Celebrating is not a luxury; it’s an opportunity to: ? reinforce our confidence: to remind ourselves that we are capable and progressing, ?learn from the journey?that brought us to the success, ?pause and feel gratitude?for ourselves and those who supported us along the way. Some dates are always special such as today, the date when we launched Silver Talkies Club six years ago in 2018, based on the inputs from attendees of our events. They wanted to meet more often, know their co-participants better and have more fun and engaging opportunities. Hence Silver Talkies Club was born in a time and age when active ageing, loneliness and isolation among older adults were not spoken about or discussed much in our country. I was in fact told by many peers that I was playing in a small niche field. Fast forward to 2024, almost every new player in the senior care space is looking at addressing similar issues with similar models. Did we start too early or did they start too late? I think it is immaterial for as they say that all's well that ends well. What is most heartening for me is to note that in the pic below all the people who became members in 2018 are still members in 2024, with the exception of one member whom we lost a few months ago. "Treat People Like Family." ?? As part of our 40th anniversary celebration, we're highlighting one of our company values each month. And in July, we're asking clients and members of the Direct Development team to share moments where DD has lived this value. ?? Up next, here's a memory from DD's Marcus Hanscom, Director of Enrollment Marketing: "While I'm officially wearing the DD uniform now, I've felt like part of the family since about 2009. I remember meeting Tony and his father (and DD founder), Charlie Fraga, at NAGAP. I'd see them each year, and the DD team always knew me by name and asked how things were going. I looked forward to connecting with the DD team because they genuinely cared about sharing information and helping me grow, and I never felt like I was being pressured for a sale. Truth be told, I never had the opportunity to hire DD for any work, but that didn't change the warm welcome I received every year. Fast forward to recent years, when I was considering a shift away from my work at Roger Williams University. Tony helped me reflect on what I'd accomplished over my years in higher education — and where I could take that experience. He was always a cheerleader from afar, regardless of where I chose to hang my hat. And when I decided to join the DD team, he welcomed me with open arms.
