Imagine arriving at a shelter in New York City after a long, exhausting journey, unable to communicate in the language spoken around you. For many migrants and asylum seekers in the city’s shelter system, this is a daily reality. With a 30% increase in shelter occupancy and over 107,000 requests for interpretation in 2024, the demand for language services has soared. Through its partnership with LanguageLine, the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) ensures that every individual, regardless of language, can access essential services in real-time. Language access is more than just interpretation—it’s a lifeline, providing dignity and support to those navigating an unfamiliar system. Diversity is soaring across North America. We invite you to contact us to discuss tailoring a language program to your community's specific needs. https://lnkd.in/eD8CzV9k ?? languageline.com #languagelinesolutions #languageline #languageservices #languageaccess #translationservices #professionaltranslation #localization #interpretationservices

The Albanese Labor Government is committed to keeping kids connected to languages. That's why we've just announced a $15 million plan to assist over 90,000 students learning 84 different languages at not-for-profit Community Language Schools throughout Australia. Community schools don’t just teach kids a new language- they build a community for families of similar backgrounds and help kids connect to elders in their communities. And our investment in community language schools means that migrant families in Australia can continue to share their language, culture and beliefs with their children and grandchildren. #Communitylanguageschools #language #australia #migration #immigration

The minds of children are a wonder. ?? Though many immigrant and refugee children move to the U.S. speaking little to no English, thanks to the gift that is a sponge-like child's brain and their immersion in school, they often learn to speak English at a rapid speed. Unfortunately, this is not always the case for their caregivers, creating a barrier between what once connected them so seamlessly - their shared heritage language. This is one of the many reasons we established our Heritage Language Classes - to support the relationships of immigrant and refugee children and their caregivers. ?? Additionally, the classes help students to: ?? Maintain their heritage language ?? Feel more connected to and proud of their culture ?? Feel empowered to speak their language if/when they visit their home country And who better to tell you about the classes than the students themselves?! ??? Watch and hear about their experiences: https://lnkd.in/gu6mcCzc Interested in learning more or registering for our (FREE) Heritage Language Classes? Those from refugee communities are often seen as a burden on society, but they are actually the backbone of the language services industry. As someone who fled the war-torn former Yugoslavia in the 90s, I've seen firsthand the incredible strength and resilience of those from refugee communities. Working with them, I’ve witnessed their dedication to bridging language barriers and fostering communication within their communities. ?? Here’s why those from refugee communities who become interpreters and translators are indispensable: ???????????? ????????????????????????: They provide authentic voices that enrich our cultural understanding. ???????????????? ????????????????: They ensure essential information is accessible, from healthcare to legal services. ???????????????? ????????????: Many possess exceptional language skills, making them excellent candidates to serve as translators and interpreters with appropriate training ?????????????????? ????????????: Their work supports both their own communities and the broader society. Celebrate the Heroes: Those from refugee communities are not just survivors; they are contributors, educators, and leaders in the language services industry. Their multilingual abilities and dedication to bridging cultural gaps are invaluable and inspirational. Join the Conversation: How have individuals from refugee communities impacted your community or industry? ?? Do third-country nationals need to pass a "citizenship test" in order to obtain the citizenship of a country? ?? This will soon be the case in Finland, with the reform of the Finnish Nationality Act which tightens the requirements for naturalisation. To learn more about the situation in other countries, Finland requested European Migration Network Member and Observer Countries to answer several questions related to their?policies?and practices on citizenship tests as part of the naturalisation process. ?? At Immigrant ARC, we know no one should have to navigate the immigration system alone. This year, through our Friend of the Court program, we supported nearly 2,000 immigrants who would have otherwise faced court proceedings without representation. With the help of 250 dedicated volunteers and our incredible member organizations, we stood beside respondents from over 40 countries, speaking more than 20 languages, ensuring they had the support and resources to defend their rights. But as we approach 2025, the challenges ahead are daunting. The threat of mass deportations and further restrictions on immigrant rights makes our work more urgent than ever. We are gearing up to meet this moment—and we need your support. Your generosity fuels our efforts to: ?? Recruit and train volunteers to stand by respondents in courtrooms across New York State. ?? Provide interpreters for languages like Wolof, Mandarin, and Turkish, ensuring language is never a barrier to justice. ?? Strengthen community connections to ensure that every immigrant has access to a fair and equitable system. Together, we can ensure that immigrant communities have the resources they need to thrive. Will you join us? Donate today and help us build a future where justice is accessible to all: https://lnkd.in/er8TvwEN #ImmigrantJustice #ImmigrationLaw #SupportImmigrants #FriendOfTheCourt #EndOfYearGiving
