Recently I was talking with a colleague about concepts that have been hot topics over the years at safety conferences. Since I have been attending conferences for the last 27 years, I had a laundry list of topics that came to mind (not an all-inclusive list): 1?? Fall Protection 2?? HOP and BBS 3?? Emergency Response 4?? PPE Protection (I mean have you been to an Expo Hall??? 1,000s of vendors offering the latest and greatest new products) 5?? Heat-Related injury prevention (This one has been an especially HOT topic?? ??? ?? ?? ?? ??) 6?? Anything & Everything related to Ergonomics But three topics that are especially important to Safety Professionals regardless of how long they have been in the business are: 1?? Getting over your fears of speaking in public 2?? How to make safety training fun 3?? How GAMIFICATION will increase retention I have a great tip for getting over your fear of public speaking but you're probably not going to like it. It is "submit a proposal" to speak at a conference. ?? I know you might be thinking I am crazy but first hear me out. There are great ways to overcome your fear of public speaking. Join Toastmasters, find a mentor who can help you with your fears, or you can just start presenting. Trust me, I was not always comfortable being at the front of a safety meeting speaking to employees who have been "doing this job since you were in diapers." But I learned some valuable lessons over the years on speaking in public. First, public speaking is nerve-wracking and can be so stressful. In a recent poll, public speaking ranked the #1 fear followed by fear of heights. The difference is I don't allow the fear to control me. I use it to ensure I am prepared for the presentation I am about to deliver. You need to find a subject that you have the most passion about and share it with your audience. Secondly, at least for me, it got easier the more times I did it. I believe the more times you present your confidence begins to increase and before you know it you won't be as fearful as when you first stepped onto that stage. Lastly, and the best advice, is you have to practice, practice, practice. You can always video yourself giving your presentation and then watch it to determine where you can improve your presentation skills. Now I understand most of us are our own worst critics. But don't fall prey to "Paralysis from over-analysis." A mentor of mine gave me the best advice as I was trying to make the presentation perfect, "Randy, sometimes good is just good enough." I encourage you to submit a topic you have passion for and see if you get selected. If you do and I am at the conference, let me know and I'll be in the front row cheering you on. ?? ?? Drop your presentation tips and hot topics in safety over the years in the comments below. ?? ?? ? ?? Kelly Buterbaugh and her team at NSC take such great care of the presenters at their conferences.

Derailments remain reasonably common although those leading to significant injury or loss of life are increasingly rare. Valuable feedback comes from the analyzes of the causes that led to the derailment. In every country, National Safety Agencies combat the risk of derailment by pushing to implement rigorous maintenance systems and high levels of staff competence through comprehensive training. https://lnkd.in/di-JUq8v
