Moving away from fossil fuels to power our vehicles is obviously a critical step the world must take in decarbonising, but only backing one horse (electric vehicles) surely has to be a mistake?
I can’t get beyond the ridiculousness of scrapping billions of existing, serviceable ICE powered vehicles, to replace them with billions of new EVs, when liquid biofuels, which are a straight replacement for fossil fuels, are fully developed and commercially available. They can literally be used in existing cars without any engine adjustment.
Notwithstanding the gargantuan carbon footprint of scrapping all those existing ICE cars, we would also have to change our infrastructure to power their electrical replacements. How many trillions of miles of copper cabling to do that? We will also have to generate a lot more electricity to feed those hungry batteries, batteries that are full of materials which are not economically viable to mine.
I am definitely not anti-electric vehicle, but I do get a sense that government has weighted the dice heavily in EVs favour. Their narrative towards this seems so monosyllabic. We need to embrace all of the options (bio/electric/hydrogen) and move them all forwards as one, each playing their part, if we really want to totally decarbonise our roads. Rant over!
