The Central Australian Women's Legal Service welcomes the announcement made by Minister Amanda Rishworth MP last week, representing an additional investment in our service which is vital to enhancing the safety and wellbeing of women, children and families in the Northern Territory ?? ?? CAWLS will receive funding to develop and pilot an Integrated Community Justice Partnership (ICJP) program. The program will adopt a partnership-based model to strengthen capacity and capability for community-led multidisciplinary responses to DFSV in remote communities including integrated elements across the prevention spectrum - primary prevention, early prevention and crisis response. ??? This is welcome news following another challenging year for CAWLS service delivery in Central Australia and the Barkly with all areas of our multidisciplinary practice at capacity. We supported 1596 women across our region through our crisis-drop in service and outreach models ?? ?? We look forward to working more comprehensively with remote communities to achieve safety, wellbeing, and access to justice for all women in our jurisdiction ?

The UK Government has written laws to protect human rights, equality, and safeguarding, yet they’re now breaking their own rules and putting lives at risk with policies that devastate the social care sector. Let’s break it down: 1??The Human Rights Act 1998 – Articles 2, 3, and 8 ????Article 2: Right to Life – People relying on care face life-threatening neglect if providers are forced to close. ??Article 3: Freedom from Inhuman or Degrading Treatment – Underfunding leads to unsafe care, leaving vulnerable individuals exposed to harm, abuse, and neglect. ????Article 8: Right to Private and Family Life – Cuts to services strip people of their dignity, independence, and support networks, isolating them from society. ?? THE GOVERNMENT IS FAILING TO PROTECT THESE BASIC RIGHTS! ?? 2??The Care Act 2014 ????Section 1: Wellbeing Principle – Councils and providers must promote wellbeing, yet funding cuts undermine safety, independence, and dignity. ??Section 42: Safeguarding – Local authorities must protect adults from neglect and abuse, but the government’s own policies are causing the neglect! ?? We’re holding them accountable providers and families deserve protection?? 3??The Equality Act 2010 ????Protected Characteristics (Age, Disability) – Discrimination by failing to provide accessible care breaches this law. ??The Public Sector Equality Duty requires decisions to reduce inequality,but policies are widening the gap, leaving disabled and elderly people at even greater risk. 4??Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities Regulations 2014) ????Regulation 12: Safe Care and Treatment – Unsafe staffing levels and service closures mean the government is failing to ensure safety and effective care. ??Regulation 18: Staffing – Staff shortages caused by these policies violate requirements for sufficient, skilled, and experienced carers. ?? Enough is enough! The government is failing the people it’s meant to protect, breaking the very laws we’re all required to follow. We are celebrating 50 years of North Kesteven District Council over the next few months. Some years ago, a retiring colleague gave me a copy of the 1968 Redcliffe-Maud Report on Local Government Reform. The report triggered the reorganisation of Local Government in 1974, albeit in a different form to that proposed in the reports conclusions. For 50 years, local government has been making a positive difference across our communities, through day in day out delivery of essential public services, community leadership, innovation, and investment in infrastructure, economic development, local housing solutions and place. At North Kesteven, we are proud of our track record...on economic development, investment in housing, development of culture and the arts, and in our commitment to customer service and performance every day in every community. A massive thank you to the whole team for making a difference now in 2024, and every day for 50 years...and we do have one colleague who has been working for the organisation throughout its 50 year history, a remarkable achievement. And what about the next 50 years? We need to reframe the debate and encourage a step change in policy development...for example...we need a new economic model, regenerative and redistributive, designed to promote flourishing communities, address climate change and reduce inequality. We need a preventive model of public service delivery, in concept a system based approach to addressing the social determinants of health. We need to break out of the 'doom loop', and boost investment in public services and infrastructure appropriate to local need and ambition. And we need a new constitutional settlement, rebuilding global and European governance, and building on the Council of Europe Charter of Local Self Government - in character more internationalist, more local, more place based, less national. And whatever the future holds in terms of the function, purpose and form of local government, we need to reverse the 'bigger is better trend' and the centralism of the last 50 years and embrace the local, the place, and the complexity of the networks, relationships and diversity that gives shape to our communities. #localgovernment #leadership #lincolnshire #sustainabledevelopment #northkesteven District Councils' Network

Far too often, those who show up to speak at public meetings when a multi-family housing project or MBTA Communities proposal is on the agenda are older, longtime residents who, frankly, already have a place to live. Often missing from that conversation are the voices of younger adults who, due to the difficulty of finding housing in Greater Boston, have or are considering leaving the state. And often, those younger workers tell us, they’d like to be part of the conversation about expanding housing availability. But don’t know where to start, who to talk to, or when to show up. That’s why our chamber, in partnership with CHAPA is launching an effort to engage young professionals in local housing conversations, starting with our virtual Housing Advocacy Workshop Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. Attendees don’t have to live or work in our chamber's communities to attend. In fact, that’s the whole idea: Municipal leaders need to hear from people who wish they could live and work in our cities and towns.
