TL;DR: I moderated a discussion with a few badass TBWA\Chiat\Day colleagues to kick off a new series called "Be More Human." Why? Because so much is lost when we—yes you, dear LinkedIn reader—see each other only as industry people. We become better humans and stewards of our communities when we really know and understand each other, and therefore, better understand the people affected by our work. The Longer Cut: If you've known me for any amount of time, you know I care very little about the self-importance anointed onto brands by brands and by the people who work on behalf of brands. The honoring of people, their every day human experience, and what we can do for them is why I'm here and what I'm looking for when I consistently ask, "who is this for" and "why does this matter?" I often see people in these industries to get so caught up in their work that they don't see the forest for the trees, even forgetting they too are a tree within the forest. Real human lives and experiences are supplanted by 'audiences' and 'consumers,' a colleague is simply a strategist, a creative, a producer, a skill set who contributes to a final product. How can we credibly discuss how we're going to create something that resonates in "the culture," how can we credibly laud the dopeness of our work or a competitor's work when we are so removed from seeing the people we work with, and ourselves, as complete humans with human experiences? As trees within the forest. Maybe I'm the crazy one, it just doesn't make sense to me.
