On The Hill Lawmakers are suiting up for the 119th Congress, where power has shifted to the GOP. Although nine state races are outstanding, Republicans have clinched the 218 seats needed for a majority in the House of Representatives. The GOP’s narrow majority faces an even slimmer future since President-elect Trump swiped three reps for his cabinet; they’ll be replaced through special elections once they officially leave the House. As some states wrap up counting, Pennsylvania announced a mandatory (but unlikely to change the winner) recount in its tight senate race between incumbent Senator Bob Casey Jr. (D) and first-count winner David McCormick (R). With solidified majorities, both chambers have chosen their top elephants. Is Hakeem Jeffries on the verge of becoming the next Speaker of the House? While most people are paying attention to the Presidential election, James Roguski would like to encourage you to pay attention to the 435 congressional races nationwide. The House will likely fall into Democratic hands regardless of who wins the presidency. 414 (207+207) of the 435 Congressional races are relatively lopsided and not very much in doubt. These races are evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans. That leaves only 21 Congressional races that are considered to be competitive. Twelve of the Congressional races involve incumbent Republicans. Seven of the Congressional races involve incumbent Democrats; two are in districts where the Democratic incumbent did not seek re-election. If all 9 Democrats win their Congressional races and only 2 of the 12 Republicans lose to their Democratic opponent, the Democrats could gain control of the House of Representatives by the slimmest possible margins (218-217).

If Ms Harris wins, Mr Trump will not be so gracious. In that third scenario, the complexity of America’s voting system collides with the?maga?conspiracy machine. The Republican National Committee has pre-emptively filed more than 100 election lawsuits in the states to create a paper trail in preparation to fight the result... To be clear, America will still see a peaceful transfer of power in January 2025. Neither side will be able to install a president who lost by the rules. But that is a minimal definition of democratic success. In the broader sense, elections are meant to generate the consent of the people to be governed, even by a president for whom they did not vote. That requires voters to believe that the process is fair and can be trusted, so that their side has a decent shot in four years. Connecticut voters in the 2024 election will be deciding who will serve as their representatives for the state legislature, the U.S. House of Representatives and one of the state’s two U.S. Senate seats. There is also a ballot question which would give the state’s General Assembly to alter the state constitution’s requirements for absentee voting. Voters will also be deciding who will receive the state’s Electoral College votes for president and vice president. For a little history, Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump received 39.2% of the vote in 2020 when he ran against President Joe Biden, who received 59.3% of the state’s votes. Biden also won the national race. In 2016 when Trump won the national race, he received support from 40.9% of Connecticut voters compared to 54.6% of voters who picked Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.. https://lnkd.in/endj99XN
