? Acadiana High’s Coffee Shop Chat! ? Yesterday, Acadiana High School hosted their “Coffee Shop Chat” in the AHS cafeteria, bringing together parents and guardians for an engaging discussion about the future of their students’ education! They provided the opportunity to chat about: ? Academic supports for your child ? Next steps as moving forward in the school year Attendees enjoyed coffee, shared thoughts with the school administrators, and had the chance to check out our school store, The Wreck Room, where they witnessed LPSS students getting firsthand business of retail experience. For most students, adolescence is an uncomfortable time. As students enter their?secondary school years—that is, middle school through high school—each day and experience lays the foundation for a lifetime of socialization and learning. Through all those changes, a?sense of belonging?among their peers could be the key to?better academic performance, enrollment retention, and improved mental health. In fact,?there’s?a surprising opportunity for schools to create connections and foster a sense of belonging with students, and it’s already part of their schedules: lunchtime. I was honored to moderate a panel during yesterday's Performance Matters Forum on the promise of high-dosage tutoring (HDT) in Connecticut. Joined by leaders from Manchester, Thompson, and Regional District 15 school districts, we discussed the significant impact of the Connecticut State Department of Education's $11.5 million investment in HDT for math students statewide. Here are my five quick takeaways from listening to the panelists: ? The program is making a difference. Districts are reporting jumps in student performance, and equally important, increases in student confidence, engagement, and attendance. Even more promising data coming soon! ?? An initiative like this does not happen on its own. The district leadership required to introduce a disruptive but highly effective intervention mid-school year, with an already jam-packed school day, is nothing short of commendable. ?? Balancing essential elements with adaptability is crucial to scaling evidence-based policies and programs. We were firm with the model - 3 days a week, minimum 30-minute sessions, tutor-student ratios no greater than 1 to 4, during the school day - but allowed flexibility in other areas. ?? Instructional coherence matters. Teacher-tutor coordination matters. A disconnect between what students learn in class and what they experience in tutoring can undermine the program’s effectiveness. ?? Finally, the impact of a reliable, dedicated, and motivational tutor cannot be overstated. When students love their tutor, the mindset around tutoring changes from something they "have to do" to something they "get to do." Lots of gratitude to organizations like the National Student Support Accelerator for their help getting our state on board with and invested in this initiative. As a former math teacher, I'm excited to see how school leaders continue to harness the promise of HDT for students across CT! Learn more about what we're doing at https://lnkd.in/efhZVRNB
Today, the Connecticut State Department of Education hosted its annual Performance Matters Forum at the Connecticut Convention Center. Commissioner Charlene M. Russell-Tucker gave welcome remarks highlighting the Department’s theme – A Universe of Opportunities – and the focus areas for the school year while Joel Moore and Zeke Perez of Education Commission of the States gave the keynote address on national education policy trends on student wellness. Thank you, Joel and Zeke, for joining us to speak to our districts! One of CSDE’s continued focus areas for the 2024-2025 school year is to “support safe and healthy learning environments for students and school staff with continued attention to addressing their mental health needs.” ?

Building a Positive School Culture Together The culture of a school is shaped by everyone in it. As you walk through a school, observe how the front office staff interacts, how teachers and staff communicate in the hallways, and how students engage with each other. While the administration sets the tone, it's the collective effort of everyone that creates a positive school environment. Each person plays a crucial role in fostering a welcoming and supportive atmosphere where everyone feels valued and respected. Dr. Brad Johnson emphasizes that it's a shared responsibility to build a thriving school culture. #SchoolCulture #PositiveEnvironment #TeamEffort #EducationalCommunity #StudentSuccess #TeacherSupport #PositiveVibes #InternationalSchoolNetworks #ISN #BradJohnson #SchoolLeadership #InclusiveEducation

Here's just a tiny snippet of teacher feedback from this year's question: "What does TEP mean to you and your school?" to hit your feels... - The Education Partnership is your friend and support system as they provide you with new resources and materials to help the future of the world in your classroom. - It's the reason I am still there - I cannot thank the employees enough at Education Partnership, their giving personalities truly shine as they hand supplies out to the shoppers. - The Education Partnership makes me feel important and valued. - TEP is a bonus for the work that we do.?It is a treat that means I don't have to buy quite as much.?It is a reminder that I am appreciated. - TEP means that my students and my family are able to enjoy the best of me through their help with my mental health, financially, and enjoyment of life in general. - The Education Partnership is a highlight at the beginning and middle of my school year.?To be honest, I equate it to a trip to Disney.?I never know what will be waiting for me when I arrive, nor do I know where my imagination might take me as I explore the items available.?I find such joy entering a place that provides me with what I need to meet my students' needs and allows me to bring creativity into my classroom without spending my entire paycheck.?These gifts are secured by the teachers, trickle to the students and the families.?I had a student in my room tell me that he took the Peppa Pig books he received from TEP to his younger brother in Colorado.?Imagine if some of the other items were tracked.?A web of happiness would be spun that begins in a little building located at 281 Corliss Street in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.?You are doing amazing things! ...and there are thousands of more responses just like these. Join us at tomorrow evening's annual Teacher Appreciation Awards at the University of Pittsburgh to return the love and recognize 18 of the top educators and staff SWPA has to offer. https://lnkd.in/ehcSd989 Or just thank a teacher - That works too. Congrats to all teachers on the end of another school year!

Today, I was fortunate enough to help represent Vinal Technical High School at ADL’s “#NoPlaceForHate Day” hosted by the Hartford Yard Goats at their home field, Dunkin Park. It was inspiring to see schools that have been in the program from the start and those that recently joined (such as Vinal Tech) collaborate. Programs such as No Place For Hate should be commonplace in all schools. This program helps students understand equity, challenge bias, and create a culture of tolerance in our schools. These values are essential for education, the workplace, and life. Speaking from my experience in the program, even small actions can help students feel connected and safer in their schools. But how do these programs set up kids for success in life and the workplace? 1. Tolerance: In any career (and in life), you will work with people you don’t understand or agree with. Learning how to be tolerant and understanding at a young age sets children up for success in these situations. 2. Advacosy: No Place For Hate is student driven. This helps students not only build confidence but also learn how to advocate for themselves and their community. 3. People Skills: This program encourages discussion and connection. Students build meaningful bonds that could benefit them down the road, and they learn how to interact in a respectful manner. I encourage everyone to urge your local schools to adopt No Place For Hate, or a similar program. Help create better school environments for kids, and encourage them to create a better future. #equity #education #equality

Positive Education in the UK is growing rapidly. Mellor Primary in Stockport was the first school in the UK to achieve the Everyday Magic Positive Education School status. Recently I sat down with Jim Nicholson, Headteacher at Mellor Primary to talk about why he choose the Everyday Magic training programme for his school, and the impact it has had there on resilience, wellbeing and attainment. Here’s his advice for any schools still considering the Everyday Magic route to positive education. Look out for the full interview coming soon. #positiveeducation #positivepsychology #education

?? I recently wrote an article for #FGCU360 about the Lucas Center’s 10-year tradition of professional development book clubs at Florida Gulf Coast University. I've joined at least five of these clubs at #FGCU over the years so I know firsthand how they foster innovation, build community and challenge participants to explore new ideas. Here are three key takeaways from the article that can be applied to anyone looking to grow professionally: ? 1.) Step outside your comfort zone. Like Laura Frost, who took on a challenging topic outside her typical field, we grow the most when we embrace new ideas and experiences that push us to think differently. ? 2.) Engage in meaningful dialogue. Like Jackie Greene said, there's a kind of magic in workplace book clubs, where diverse perspectives are shared by participants from different academic backgrounds. Having open discussions with people from various disciplines enriches your own understanding and sparks innovation. ? 3.) Build a sense of community. Professional growth isn’t just about personal success — like Bill Reynolds said, it’s about fostering connections that support and inspire you. FGCU’s book clubs help faculty build lasting relationships and share knowledge that strengthens the entire campus. ? Consider starting or joining a workplace group where you can share knowledge and grow together. Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/euyUeBU4 #LifelongLearning #BuildCommunity?#FacultyDevelopment
