This may be an uncomfortable read to some of you, but still, the shrewdness of it pleasantly surprised me: "The Unrestrained Corporatization and?Professionalization?of the?Human Rights?Field," authored by J. Sebastián Rodríguez-Alarcón and Valentina Montoya-Robledo. I can easily say this is one of the most interesting articles I have read this year, even though it was published in 2018. It taps into the perils of extreme professionalization of human rights work; how this "excessive corporatization" is creating a disconnect between human rights practitioners and the communities being served; and how, with this level of saturation, several human rights entities have lost sight of their initial purpose. The more corporatized and professionalized, the less connected to the communities, to the primary objective of making change happen. It may read very, very cynically, but this is exactly the depth of critique we need today, especially when we are all pondering the backsliding of human rights around the world.

Happy Women's Day! For many years already, this day has not been just about receiving tulips ?? for me. As the Vice President and President of the Estonian Bar Association, I have done my best to raise women's self-awareness and to nudge female leaders in both law firms and society at large. This year, conveying the message of Women's Day has been made particularly easy for me ?? I applaud to the President of the International Bar Association, Almudena Arpón de Mendívil (yes, she is a woman too!) who has today formulated the Ten Directives to Break the Glass Ceiling in our Profession. I wholeheartedly agree with and encourage you all to follow these simple rules. Let's start with the ones that depend on ourselves. And if our workplace doesn't support our endeavours, it's time to change the environment. #womenempoweringwomen MY TEN DIRECTIVES TO BREAK THE GLASS CEILING IN OUR PROFESSION A. Those which depend on us: 1. Merits are a must; we must constantly keep building our skills and knowledge 2. Grow professional relationships, a network of the widest possible range of people 3. Gain visibility. Internal and external 4. Own the professional space that belongs to you 5. Maintain a healthy work-life balance: define your priorities. Find your super food/whatever you need to gain strength 6. Be yourself. It is the thing you excel at B. Those which the workplace must embrace: 1. Opportunity 2. Visibility 3. Flexibility 4. Following the recent call from over 60 legal professionals for judges who are members of the men-only Garrick Club to resign their memberships, the Garrick Club last week voted to allow women to join, with nearly 60% in favour. Arguably a positive step, as opposed to a pyrrhic victory for leading campaigners, should other exclusive clubs with lawyer members continue to exist. Given the already inequitable position of women in law (gender pay gap, talent retention, career progression), can these types of clubs/ organisations ever have a justifiable role given the obvious division within the profession that they have enabled? Brilliant article here considering this: https://bit.ly/4ald8qv What are your thoughts? Should the "boys clubs" still be going in 2024? Do they affect the careers of women through their exclusion? Would you become a member now that women are welcome? Did you know that some of Britain's top judges and barristers are members of a club that has repeatedly denied women membership? This sheds light on a concerning issue of institutional inequality within our legal system. As a legal recruiter passionate about diversity and inclusion, I believe this exclusionary practice perpetuates outdated norms and limits opportunities for talented women in law. To foster a more inclusive environment within the legal profession, we need to unite and challenge these barriers. Join the conversation on how we can collectively address institutional inequality and pave the way for a more equitable future in law. Let's work towards a more diverse and inclusive legal profession by sharing this article. #WomenInLaw #GenderEquality #LegalJustice #InstitutionalInequality #JoinTheConversation Read more: https://lnkd.in/ePd6a2ze

Creating own space, on own terms, is so important for every human being. This can mean something slightly or totally different for each of us. ”My own space, on my own terms” is one of the basic human needs and a condition for real inclusion, financial freedom and peace. I adore metaphors because they are palpable and work in my imagination immediately, like pop-up images. One of my favourite metaphors is Heroin’s journey… where it all starts with embracing feminine qualities, then - getting in touch with the masculine and finally appears space for the ”marriage” of these two. That integration is essential and shows up as healthy boundaries, self-compassion, self-love, ego rooted in Self which is our deepest personal space. In practical terms wholeness is a balance between being active and receptive. Balance between work and love. Putting effort in creating own space in one’s life is a part of individuation, an individual journey for wholeness and balance. And, yes, this can be a radical act of self-love and social activism. ?? ??I wonder how do YOU measure your balance between work and love today? ??Where is your personal space today? ??When does it expand, shrink or change? ——————————————————————— I am excited and happy to be a part of #TheExpatWoman as a founding member, where we cocreate space - a community of supportive, experienced women - coaches, consultants, entrepreneurs - who definately share passion for globetrotting. ?? Thank you Nyna Caputi for creating this visionary, fruitful, international initiative! ?????????? #expatwoman #empoweringwomen #InternationalCoachingWeek
