Here in Elkhart, we had the privilege for the 2nd?year in a row to teach the participants of the Map the Gap program at Indiana University South Bend. These students graduated high school and are now exploring their options before they take their next step in their career. Nine very intelligent young people participated and earned a certificate for Master your Money, Lacasa’s budgeting and money management class. During the class, a bouquet of flowers showed up from the group to say thank you to Lacasa for making this class available to them! Thank you to the dedicated people at IUSB for making this opportunity available to young high school graduates in our area! #lacasainc #financialempowerment #IUSB #mapthegap

This week’s?#AlumniThenAndNow?highlight features Shavell Rodgers from the De La Salle Institute Class of 2016! Shavell went off to Chicago State University to study management and finance and now works as an operator at Durham Quality Plus! ??What was DMSF’s impact on you? ?? Receiving the DMSF scholarship gave me access to a high quality private school education, an amazing and supportive mentor, and a staff that really cared about me receiving not only a quality high school education, but a quality college education as well. Receiving the DMSF scholarship helped me stay focus through high school and opened my eyes up to so many amazing colleges. I learned that I could truly do anything I set my mind to do. All it takes is a little hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice. ??For you, what does it mean to be a Murphy Scholar? ?? Being a Murphy Scholar means that you’re not going to let the obstacles and challenges that you might face in life stand in the way of achieving your goals and dreams. Being a Murphy Scholar means that you’re going to use all of the resources and programs that are available to you to have the best high school and college experience that you could possibly have. Being a Murphy Scholar means that you’re going to give back and pay it forward to help all of the new scholars that come after you. ??What advice do you have for current Murphy Scholars? ??To never be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. It’s totally okay to approach people and put yourself in an environment that might be uncomfortable for you. It’s only going to help grow your network and open up amazing opportunities for you. Thank you for encouraging us to step outside of our comfort zones! #35YearsOfMurphyScholars?#AlumniThen&Now?#HighSchoolScholarship?#EducationAccess

Wow ?? a fantastic piece by Milton Keynes College Group Chair of Governors, highlighting the CRUCIAL role of FE Colleges in society, and the responsibility of College Governors. My key takeaways ?? #CollegesWeek2024 ? “…I confess I was largely ignorant of the complex and vital role Further Education plays in our society. A few years on…and I realise my lack of knowledge is almost universal among business leaders, politicians and journalists. We’ve all heard the phrase, “a place for other people’s children” in conversations about the FE sector, and I believe it is that blind spot in the eye of the establishment which represents our greatest obstacle in achieving the success our communities deserve.” ? “In many ways, I think colleges are the most responsible educational institutions in any area. When I see the lengths the staff go to to safeguard learners, to support them in whatever difficult positions life has placed them, to allow them to discover themselves in a safe environment, I feel nothing but pride.” ? “I was speaking to a government minister recently about the work of the College, and it was clear they weren’t aware of the range of FE’s work in the community and of all the other things that go on outside the classroom. They could talk about figures and funding, certainly, but could not, or did not, talk about the pastoral care and signposting which is a key role FE plays.” ? “What people with no contact with the sector don’t understand is how we do so much for so little. They don’t know that a dedicated and professional teacher at a college is almost certainly earning thousands of pounds less a year than they would if they moved to a local sixth form. And how does that happen anyway? How is teaching the same subjects to young people in what can be a far more challenging environment than a school somehow worth so much less? Simply put, it is allowed to happen because of that blind spot.”
ICYMI: Time for FE governors to stand up: Ruby Parmar, Chair of Governors at Milton Keynes College Group emphasises the vital role of Further Education (FE) and urges FE governors to raise awareness… Time for FE governors to stand up was published on FE News by Milton Keynes College Read more here:

This WSJ article details the confluence of factors that have worked against college-bound students in the fall ahead. The central problem revolves around the overhauled FAFSA. Streamlining intended, the FAFSA online platform has been frought with a number of bugs that have delayed processing. This problems cascade into difficult circumstances for students. Students depend on results to make financially responsible registration decisions. Schools are attempting to accommodate them with extended deadlines. The FAFSA problem is compounded by the new ruling on affirmative action, leaving students to determine whether it is okay to be race-revealing — directly or indirectly — in essays. Additionally, this year’s students also have had to navigate the test-optional offer and determine what is in their better interests. #highereducation #fafsa #financialaid #collegeadmissions #enrollmentmanagement #financialliteracy #affirmativeaction #highereducationleadership #highered

Today is National College Decision Day! Some colleges have extended their decision deadlines this year because of delays and technical glitches with the new FASFA rollout, and some of our seniors are still making final decisions about which schools to attend, but we are excited for their adventures ahead! #CollegeBound #CollegeFirst #CollegeDecisionDay

The American Association of Community Colleges points to this research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond that expands the measure of success beyond the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) #IPEDS metrics. IPEDS measures first-time, full-time degree seeking students who enter in a fall term and graduate within 150% time (3 years for an associate degree). If you are familiar with community colleges you know how that metric doesn't cover most students. Expanding the metric results in a 3x improvement when being realistic about success. https://lnkd.in/ehnx3xfa

We have been ranked as the "Best value independent co-ed school in England" for the second year running, by The Telegraph. The independent analysis compares the fees charged by schools with the results achieved at GCSEs and A-Levels to reveal the highest-performing schools for the best price. Offering an outstanding, value-for-money, all-round education is at the heart of The Grange School's mission. Not only are our exam grades very good, but based on the school's average value-added* scores, students here perform better at A level and GCSE than would have been expected almost anywhere else. *Value-added is the difference between the expected grade from a student’s baseline assessment score at the beginning of their course and the grade they actually achieved.
