Effective March 2024, employees in New York City can bring private actions against their employers for violations of the Earned Safe and Sick Time. Previously, employees could only file a complaint with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection. The statute of limitations for an employee to bring such an action is two years from when the employee knew or should have known about the employer’s violation. I believe that unions can have a significant positive impact in the workplace. From my experience, I’ve seen how unions provide job security and improved wages, creating a stable and secure environment for families. The 2020 pandemic highlighted the importance of addressing employees' needs and ensuring fair treatment. Unions and union members play a vital role in advocating for employees, ensuring their rights and well-being are prioritized. This advocacy reduces stress and anxiety for workers and their families, fostering a sense of community and solidarity. In my experience, unions have successfully negotiated for better working conditions through strikes and collective bargaining, creating a happier workplace. Understanding the importance of mental health and parental leave is essential, as personal lives can affect work performance. I know individuals who have lost their jobs or faced suspensions due to personal issues.
