Case 4 - Tennis elbow without ever touching a racket. ? Tennis elbow is the colloquial term for lateral epicondylitis caused by overuse of the extensor muscles/tendons of the posterior forearm causing pain at the outside of the elbow and forearm. Tennis is just one of an array of disciplines that can lead to the symptoms. Importantly it is not primarily the volume of training that can cause the condition but also training with improper form. While the term “tennis elbow” already doesn’t immediately make you think other sports could cause the condition it completely overlooks how another large group of patients acquires it: ? Just by doing their job. ? Patient history: A 45-year-old male patient working in a warehouse. His daily work involves packing quite heavy tubing and storing it on racks. Despite physiotherapy, taking time off of work and NSAR medication the symptoms of lateral epicondylitis wouldn’t subside. Waiting it out had also been tried (according to the literature 90% of cases resolve within a year). But the symptoms had now persisted for 18 months already, causing substantial pain at work but also at rest and especially at night (NRS 8/10, 3/10, 7/10). A MRI of the elbow depicts the inflammation of the tendons just at the entheses of the lateral epicondyle (A). ? Procedure: Via a retrograde transbrachial approach a microcatheter was advanced distally in the radial recurrent artery (B) and after confirmation of hyperenhancement (“blush”) (C), embolization was performed with a suspension of Imipenem/Cilastatin and iodinated contrast until the blush-type enhancement vanished (D). An ice pack was placed around the elbow to protect the skin from non-target embolization. ? Outcome: Pain at rest and during nighttime disappeared completely. Pain at work decreased to a much lower level (2/10 NRS). #IR #interventionalradiology #msk

This week, footballers Neymar & Gavi returned to play their first matches after 11 months of physiotherapy ?? ???? Brazilian soccer star Neymar ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his left knee on 17 October 2023 and underwent surgery in November while FC Barcelona's Gavi underwent ACL surgery after suffering the injury in Spain's Euro 2024 qualifying win over Georgia last November, and missed the rest of the season, along with ???? Spain's triumph at the Euros. Current research suggests a minimum of 9 months rehabilitation training before an athlete returns to sport (RTS). This process should be guided by the surgeon and physiotherapist because athletes reduced their reinjury rate by 51% for every month they delayed their RTS. Another study found that athletes who returned before the 9-month time point were 6.7 times more likely to suffer another ACL injury. Our suggestion is to allow people back to sport if they have satisfied the key criteria mentioned in this video, such as clearing the functional tests, regaining confidence in playing, and implementing an injury prevention programme before each training session and match. "A unique spirit was felt here – the athletes didn't come for medals, not to defeat others, but primarily to defeat themselves," shares ?????? Vilija Ru?kien?, a physiotherapist-orthopedic technologist from the company "Ortopedijos technika", who was part of the Ottobock technical service team at the games. This year’s Paralympic Games technical service team consisted of 164 members from 41 countries, speaking 32 languages. Throughout the games, 3,010 technical service visits were recorded. More than 55% were wheelchair repairs, 17% involved orthopedic braces, nearly 15% were for prosthetics services, and the remaining 13% involved fitting braces, orthopedic insoles, and other equipment repairs. "It was very interesting to be part of such a grand event, to see how much staff works, and how much medical and technical equipment is needed for Paralympians to be able to participate and compete in the games. I was particularly impressed by how the Paralympians care for and support each other and how they have fun together. The Paralympic Games are not just about sports. It's an extraordinary event where physical disability unlocks other enormous human powers," our colleague Vilija Ru?kien? believes.

This finding is crucial, as it suggests a heightened risk of musculoskeletal injuries among younger players. ?? Interestingly, the study also noted that as these athletes mature and accumulate more playing experience, the disparities in arm function tend to decrease, pointing to the body's adaptability and the role of refined training techniques. ?
