???? What’s turning Scotland's woodlands into 'ghosts?' ?? Our ghost woodlands expert, Kieran Leigh-Moy joined presenter Arlene Phillips on episode 20 of #Landward to discuss the vital role of ghost woodlands and what we're doing to protect them. Highlights from Kieran: ?? Woodlands with canopy cover lasting hundreds—or even thousands—of years create a unique home for plants, animals, fungi, and lichens like Lobaria pulmonaria (lungwort). But when this cover disappears, these species begin to vanish too. ?? Ancient trees are still producing seeds, but their future is at risk. ?? Overgrazing poses a serious threat; in Scotland, 18,000 hectares of upland ancient woodlands have been lost over a 40 year period. Also hear from farmer Martin Girvan, who is already seeing incredible recovery in his protected ghost woodland after just five months.
