In our previous post we mentioned curing a carbon fibre tube at 80 psi (5.5 Bar). How does that work? In brief, the laminate is rolled up around a long skinny plastic bag that is open at both ends. This assembly is then placed into its mould, and a second bag is sealed around both the mould and to the inner bag in such a way that the ends of the inner bag remain open to the atmosphere. Picture a double-walled bag with the carbon laminate in the middle. A vacuum line is attached to pull any air from this assembly and do an initial consolidation. The whole thing goes into a pressure tank next (vacuum line still attached), and the tank is pressurized. This squeezes the laminate much more than vacuum alone is able to achieve. Excess resin will bleed out, and any remaining trapped air will be highly compressed. Next day, open the pressure tank and demould the product. This method gives a very high quality structural tube.
