Congratulations Justin Whitworth on receiving the Special Reach Star of Service! Justin is studying teacher education at Palo Alto College. He has worked as a donation attendant for 3 years at the Second Chances thrift shop and Helotes Humane Society. His hobbies include reading history and politics, going on walks, and making new friends. Justin says his favorite thing about Special Reach is that, "It is an uplifting place to volunteer. The staff, families, fellow volunteers and participants are kind members of the community. The energy and communication they bring helps bring out our comradery. Everyone leaves happy after each event." He adds, "Special Reach has solidified my decision to be a special education teacher. I've seen participants who were reluctant to try new activities and believe in themselves. I feel great joy being a volunteer at Special Reach events. I have made many friends and acquaintances in the community. I have learned many things from the teachers." Next week, I’ll be stepping into my new role as a Foster Panel Member with New Chapters Fostering, an outstanding provider dedicated to ensuring children in care receive the love and support they deserve. It feels surreal to think that once, I was the child in the care system, with no say over what happened to me. Now, the tables have turned, and I’m here to make sure these children get the best care possible. Only those who are fostering for the right reasons will have that privilege. The ones who really care, the ones who want to make a difference. I never imagined I’d be where I am today—working full time, running a nonprofit, managing my self-employed projects, and now taking on this critical role. It’s a lot, and yes, sometimes I feel overloaded. But this is good stress. It’s not the stress of wondering where my next meal is coming from or how I’ll survive another day. It’s the stress of doing meaningful work, of being in a position to make a difference. I’m becoming the person I needed when I was younger, and that’s more than enough for me. So, to my younger self—keep on keeping on, Saffy. Slow down when you need to. You don’t have to make up for anything anymore. You’re okay. You’re more than okay. ??. My younger me would feel safe and happy around adult me. ?? Here’s how we can nurture a child’s relationship with their community: Encouraging Participation: Involve children in community activities, such as planting trees, visiting local markets, or attending cultural events. This gives them a sense of belonging and responsibility. Storytelling and Role Models: Share stories about community leaders or helpers, emphasizing how their actions positively impact everyone. This inspires children to be active contributors themselves. Teaching Gratitude and Giving Back: Encourage children to appreciate their community by engaging in small acts of kindness, such as sharing with friends, helping neighbors, or donating toys and books. Creating Opportunities for Expression: Foster discussions where children can share their thoughts and feelings about their community, and listen to their ideas for improving it. A strong community bond enhances a child’s emotional and social development. Our Gift to Society: Raising children has been the greatest joy and privilege in my life. The Theory of 5’s point of view is that once we become a parent or involved in raising a child, the main goal is to nurture, guide and influence them to be a respectful, productive, self-sufficient adult. In order to do this, we have to ensure they have the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors needed to thrive on their own. My wife and I have raised 5 children together,now 30 to 39 years old . For all the challenging times, the heartaches and the sleepless nights children inevitably bring, the rewards have been far greater than anything I could ever have imagined. Imagine the kind of world we’d have if every child was raised by caring, loving and focused parents. Raising a well-adjusted, highly contributing person is the Ultimate Gift to a Society. While we can’t control how other children are raised, however, we are utterly and ultimately responsible for how we raise our own. It is not just the parents involved. Those without their own children by fate or by choice, often have a role in raising the next generation. Aunts, uncles, godparents, friends and other family members all play a part in nurturing and teaching children while supporting those children’s parents. Preparing children to be adults who make a positive dif- ference in the world is a job — and a privilege — where many people may lend a hand. The heart of TBRI? is Connection—helping to establish the trust and safety kids need to feel secure and supported, especially for those who’ve faced challenging experiences. Here are some practical ways to apply TBRI?'s Connecting Principles to strengthen your relationship with teens: Watch Something Fun Together Watching a show can be a great way to open the door to connection. A lighthearted option like Nailed It! on Netflix, where contestants tackle ambitious baking challenges (with hilarious results), can offer an opportunity to bond. The show demonstrates that it’s okay not to succeed every time and teaches the value of laughing at ourselves—something that can help teens feel more comfortable and safe in their own imperfections. Make a Playlist Together Music is a powerful connector. Ask your teen to share some of their favorite songs, and create a playlist together. This is a wonderful way to learn what excites or inspires them while offering a window into their emotions. Whether you enjoy the same music or not, showing genuine interest in their taste helps strengthen your bond. Cook Together Preparing a meal or snack as a team is a simple yet effective way to build trust. Let your teen choose the recipe and music, and invite them to join you in the kitchen. Cooking together fosters collaboration, encourages conversation, and creates shared memories. Even a quick snack like nachos or cookies can become a meaningful moment of connection. Children who arrive at Sreepur Village have had a disrupted education; each child's needs are specific to their prior adverse experiences. There are numerous challenges in accessing and attending school, and completing secondary education is a gendered issue. Financial constraints, lack of parental aspirations and safe transportation options, as well as malnutrition and health issues all combine to create multidimensional challenges.
