This year marks a century since the Denver Art Museum began collecting Indigenous art from North America. To celebrate the anniversary, the museum is putting on a series of exhibitions throughout the year. ?? Dakota Haska is the associate curator of Native art at the Denver Art Museum, and she's Oglala Lakota. She says 100 years ago, museums didn't focus on indigenous works as art. Plenty of other kinds of museums were collecting Native art, like especially historic or anthropological museums. But this was the first museum to really start collecting Native American art as artwork, Thinking and talking. About the aesthetic qualities of the things in the collection, Haska says we need to understand that time period in the broader context of what was happening to Native Americans across the country at that time. We were still under Sperry strict policies of genocide. The 1925 boarding schools were in full swing. We didn't get the opportunity to practice our religions and dances until the 1970s. In planning the exhibits, Haska says the museum wanted to acknowledge its place. In history, OK, 100 years, like, yeah, OK, that's important for a Western institution, but it's not really important for Native people who have been on this continent for millennia. So how do we get those two very disparate things to speak to each other? The museum consults an Advisory Council of Ute Cheyenne and Arapaho tribal members. The museum's first exhibit in their 100th year celebration is called Sustained the Persistent Genius. Of Indigenous art. It opened on December 16. Haska described some of the art in the exhibit, which has different sections titled Beauty, Connections, Family, Spirituality and Sacred Children. Some beautiful turquoise jewelry in a case and then got these giant earrings for the gods. We've got Osage wedding coat, but then we've got this beautiful flowing kind of cocktail dress. We've got a breastplate made by one of our local. Community members is all gun shell casings and he collected and saved all the gun shell casings from when he was hunting to support his family. We have this rightful case. When you see it, you won't believe it. It's quilled so exquisitely. Beautiful Cradle board made by Jamie Okuma. Some beaded converse made by Cherry Grease. But then we've got these sweet little Arapaho moccasins. The museum will host a community feast to celebrate the anniversary on January 16. The sustained exhibit will be open for two years at the Denver Art Museum for KSUT&KSJD. I'm Clark, out of Midas.

How to illuminate plenty of small exhibits within a large scale of museum showcase? This would be a good example, tiny recessed museum showcase lights on the top, so quietly, but accurately and vividly reveal every detail of pottery figurines, horses, and carriages.
