On September 11, 2001, terrorists took nearly 3,000 lives and injured over 6,000 others in the deadliest attack on American soil in our nation’s history. Today, on Patriot Day 2024, we remember and honor those lost and stand in solidarity with their families and friends from New York City, Arlington, Virginia, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We also pay tribute to the brave first responders who risked and sacrificed their lives to save others. On this Patriot Day, we are reminded of the enduring strength of the American people. This resilience fuels our ongoing fight against terrorism. Since September 11, the United States has steadfastly defended the homeland, safeguarded our people, and supported our allies in this vital mission.

What emotions do you hope the Global War on Terrorism Memorial will evoke? Did you know that our design process has included a first-of-its-kind public input campaign where we gathered design insight from thousands of Americans? We look forward to building a Memorial that tells the entire story of how our Nation has waged this multi-generational war, and gives a voice to ALL whom this incredibly complex conflict has impacted. gwotmf.org

Yesterday, the U.S. and the world commemorated the 9/11 attacks, a day that forever changed the course of history. In the aftermath, the U.S. and its allies vowed to wage a global war on terror, promising to make the world a safer place. But 23 years later, the reality feels much different. Terrorism has not been eradicated; in fact, it has evolved and spread. Radical ideologies continue to gain momentum, and the threats we face today are more complex and widespread. Instead of the world becoming safer, it often feels like the West has grown weaker in confronting these challenges. Extremists are emboldened, and the global landscape is more fractured. The commitment to fight terror should not have diminished, yet it seems that the unity and determination we once saw have faded. If we are to truly honor the memory of those lost on 9/11, we must recognize that this fight is far from over. The world must stand stronger, more united, and more determined than ever to confront and defeat terrorism.

"This is a hot Cold War II. The West has empirically lost deterrence. We must respond to this emergency to regain it. We have a peer adversary: China. “Near-Peer” is a shibboleth, a euphemism to avoid the embarrassment of acknowledging we have peers when we were once peerless. In World War II, America was the best at mass production. Today that distinction belongs to our adversary. America’s national security requires a robust industrial base, or it will lose the next war and plunge the world into darkness under authoritarian regimes. In the current environment, American industries can’t produce a minimum line of ships, subs, munitions, aircraft, and more. It takes a decade or two to deliver new major weapon systems at scale. If we’re in a hot war, we would only have days worth of ammunition and weapons on hand. Even more alarming is our lack of capacity and capability to rapidly repair and regenerate our weapon systems. Given the vast sums we have spent on defense in these decades of Pax Americana, it would be reasonable to wonder: what went wrong?" https://www.18theses.com/

How It's Going, Part 4: Post 911 "Now, the question is whether the war on terror is a war against terror or a war of terror. And what we can clearly see, it's the latter. Terrorism has increased 4,500% since 911, with now something like 10 times as many people being killed in terrorist attacks today than there were in 2000." Today marks 23 years since the devastating 9/11 attacks, a pivotal moment in modern history. On September 11, 2001, four commercial planes were hijacked by terrorists, resulting in catastrophic crashes into the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The timeline of events unfolded with horrifying speed, leaving 2,996 people dead, over 6,000 injured, and causing unprecedented destruction. The aftermath saw heroic emergency responses, global outrage, and a significant shift in international relations, leading to the launch of the War on Terror and enhanced security measures worldwide. Opening the floor for discussion: Around 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, China militarized the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, and Iran was allowed to pursue the bomb. A decade later, we have had more than 300 attacks on U.S. bases by Iran, 1,200 people slaughtered in a pogrom in Israel, an estimated 1 million casualties in brutal combat in Ukraine, and an unprecedented tempo of CCP phase zero operations in the Taiwan Straits. This is a hot Cold War II. The West has empirically lost deterrence. We must respond to this emergency to regain it. We have a peer adversary: China. “Near-Peer” is a shibboleth, a euphemism to avoid the embarrassment of acknowledging we have peers when we were once peerless.
