Rocker, PhD. and Rusty Smith explore the challenges and opportunities of redeveloping Atlanta’s Westside. One of Atlanta’s most salient and popular planning gems, the Atlanta Beltline, was conceived within an academic context and enthusiastically adopted by the city government. It is a great piece of planning that has energized and connected neighborhoods across the city, but has also catalyzed the displacement of legacy residents within those neighborhoods. Later phases of The Beltline trail system offer an opportunity for a second chance. In the video, Peter Skillman describes a challenge, the "Marshmallow Challenge", in which teams are tasked with building the tallest possible structure using spaghetti, tape, and a marshmallow. He conducted this challenge with various groups, including CEOs, engineers, business students, and kindergarteners. Surprisingly, the kindergarteners consistently outperformed the other groups. Skillman attributes their success to a willingness to experiment and an absence of hierarchical structures. This challenge is of course not about CEOs, engineers or business students but it really serves as a compelling demonstration of the importance of prototyping, iterative development, and learning from mistakes in any project. https://lnkd.in/d5Azbyzt

While this might seem like a gaming milestone, it actually has a lot in common with what we do as engineers and designers. Here’s how: ?? Strategic Thinking: Just like in Clash of Clans, where every base layout and upgrade is carefully planned to withstand attacks, engineering requires thoughtful design and strategic foresight to build systems that can handle real-world challenges. ?? Resource Management: In both the game and in engineering projects, we need to manage resources wisely—whether it’s elixir and gold or time and materials. Efficiency and optimization are key to success. ?? Iteration and Improvement: Upgrading your base is never done in one go—it’s a process of trial, error, and constant refinement. This mirrors the iterative nature of engineering, where every project involves prototyping, testing, and fine-tuning. ???? Collaboration: Just like coordinating attacks with your clanmates, teamwork in engineering and design is essential. No successful project is ever done alone, and learning from others strengthens both outcomes and experience. So, while I celebrate my Clash of Clans milestone, I’m reminded of the lessons that extend far beyond the game.
