My son is inordinately proud of the 'MEGA FAST PLANES!' t-shirt he designed and made himself yesterday. The photo is hard to depict here, but it features a supersonic plane (check), two other planes and a helicopter (OK, sound logic), and a bus, a unicorn, and a shark (huh?!). I tried to convince him that perhaps the bus, unicorn, and shark didn't belong on a t-shirt called MEGA FAST PLANES!, but he was having none of it. I let it slide (begrudgingly), because he is 5. This is something I have seen time and time again in my almost two decades of development work. Don't be that person trying shoe-horn a bus into your MEGA FAST PLANES! strategy, or trying to convince a consortium that a shark has a place in your theory of change. Even worse, don't be the donor that states in a MEGA FAST PLANES! RFP that you also want to see unicorns, because - although mythical creatures not known for their speed - they also fly. Let's leave this logic where it belongs; on t-shirts designed by 5 year olds.

A very interesting day at the MASS at Moorgate event, very well hosted by Cathal Leigh-Doyle at Stephenson Harwood LLP. The MASS industry is a hive of innovation and it was very clear that huge progress has been made in the last 12 months. I don't often find myself at the very leading edge of new tech so it was great to speak to some of those operating in this space. The regulations applicable to innovative technology are still developing and it was really interesting to hear from operators and the regulators on the challenges around this. Ports provide a near-shore location for trials, but they're often congested and full of other navigational hazards. How MASS vessels safely interact with other vessels is a key factor for Harbour Masters, but industry is well ahead on this with some very intelligent solutions to collision avoidance. My key takeaway from the day was that to manage that risk, I need to keep myself informed of regulations and operations in this ever-changing tech space. The day also gave me some ideas.. watch this space.

When people learn that I fly a floatplane, the most common question I get is "what's different about landing on the water?" Such a big question! One of the most hazardous situations when water flying is, paradoxically, when the weather is nicest! When the wind is calm and the sky clear blue, the water lays down like glass, creating a mirror-like surface. This requires a very exacting technique since direct perception of height above water is impossible to ascertain. These side-by-side videos show two consecutive glassy-water landings to the same section of river. My technique in the first landing shows a common error. Becoming impatient as I watched myself flying toward the trees at the river-bend, I started to "feel" for the water, dropping the nose infinitesimally - perhaps 1°. The result: 2 water landings in one, as I skipped off the surface and back airborne. Fortunately it did not result in porpoising, or multiple pitch excursions, which has been known to cause damage. In the video on the right, taken just after eating that slice of humble pie, I forced myself to be patient, and simply wait out the steady-speed and attitude descent path until hearing the floats contact the river surface. Note the single, smooth splashdown and deceleration. Glassy water takeoffs have also been known to create problems because the pilot loses situational awareness immediately after liftoff, inadvertently settling back into the water with sometimes disastrous results.
