YIS’s Pledge to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Belonging (DEIJB) At YIS, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where everyone in our community feels respected, valued, and included. This commitment comes to life through our focus on gender equity and the diverse voices of BIPOC, people with disabilities, neurodiverse individuals, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Our journey to articulate this commitment began with a simple question from our LGBTQIA+ Team: "How many clicks does it take to find our community's commitment to diversity on our website?" Realizing the need for a more visible statement, students from the high school Gender Equity Movement and LGBTQIA Advocacy Team collaborated to create a comprehensive DEIJB statement. This effort was complemented by a student-designed logo that symbolizes our commitment. We believe that embracing DEIJB not only enriches our community but also sets a standard for behavior and decision-making within YIS. This statement is now prominently displayed on our website and integrated into our operations and culture. We are proud to say that it guides us in creating a safe and inclusive space for all, ensuring that every person at YIS feels they truly belong. For a detailed look at our DEIJB commitment and community reactions, check out the full article on our website linked in the comments.

To anyone interested in developing resources to promote #socialjusticeeducation, I would highly recommend this framework from Team Eltonix! (NB: Authentic language might include instances of swearing :)).
As promised, Sarah & Sea have recorded their IATEFL 2024 talk: Stop Including Us!?Arguments Against Inclusion & For Diversity. ? Current initiatives to support LGBTQIA+ students are overwhelmingly designed around inclusion principles which encourage deficit-based interpretations of how queer students experience school. Such models elicit sympathy and tolerance and therefore position students as eternal victims existing on the periphery of school life. We propose our social justice framework to effectively disrupt hetero-/gender-normative practices and celebrate diversity in our classrooms. ? Many thanks to IATEFL for selecting us to talk at the conference, and for all the participants who came to our session.? ? We would like to make this available for all who were not able to attend, and hope you find it useful. ? #socialjusticeeducation #socialjustice #diversity #equity #education #teacherdevelopment #eltonix #lgbtqia

As we celebrate Pride Month, it's important to remember our ongoing commitment to inclusion and diversity, especially when it comes to promoting LGBT2sQIA+ inclusion. Here are some steps you can take to create an inclusive organization: Education and Awareness: Educate yourself and people around you about the LGBT2sQIA+ community, their struggles, and their rights. This will foster understanding and empathy. Inclusive Policies: Review and update company policies to ensure they are inclusive. This includes non-discrimination policies, benefits, and leave policies that recognize all types of families. Safe Spaces: Create safe spaces in the workplace where LGBT2sQIA+ employees can express themselves freely. Representation: Ensure representation of the LGBT2sQIA+ community in decision-making roles. This will ensure their voices are heard and their needs are considered. Support Groups: Establish support groups within the organization where LGBT2sQIA+ employees can share their experiences and challenges. Remember, promoting LGBT2sQIA+ inclusion is not just about policies and initiatives. It's about creating a culture of acceptance and respect. Let's use this Pride Month as a stepping stone towards a more inclusive future.

Great Forbes article linked below that shows that small businesses thrive when they embraced inclusion. "The roots of DEI can be traced back to the civil rights movements of the 1960s, when activists fought against racial segregation and discrimination. Over time, the scope of diversity and inclusion work expanded to encompass not only race but also gender, sexual orientation, disability and other facets of identity. Organizations began recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusion not just as a moral imperative, but also as a strategic advantage, leading to the development of policies and initiatives aimed at promoting diversity, ensuring equity and fostering inclusive environments. Today, diversity and inclusion work continues to evolve, and it has become a political issue, with some states banning the work and others doubling down on its importance." https://lnkd.in/eB_Xupuc

Launching the Elmbridge Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy At the beginning of Pride month in June, we were thrilled to launch the Elmbridge Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) strategy. ? Our EDI Strategy outlines a step up in our aspiration and commitment towards reducing inequality throughout all our communities across Elmbridge. ? In presenting this strategy, we recognise that treating everyone the same and providing equal opportunities is not sufficient in building an inclusive Elmbridge.? ? We all face different barriers to opportunity in life, and there are parts of our community who still face systemic discrimination and prejudice. As such we acknowledge the need to provide additional support to those who need it most.? ? The strategy is significantly shaped not just by council equality, diversity and inclusion champions, but by conversations with local community groups who work to achieve this every day in relation to all of the protected characteristics and pledge to continue that engagement as we move from strategy to action.? ? https://lnkd.in/ep7n64Ay #equality #EDI #pride

???Day 5: Decentering Whiteness: Creating Space for All Voices??? In our ongoing celebration of Pride and Juneteenth, today we focus on the crucial task of decentering whiteness in our movements. Andrea Jenkins: First openly transgender Black woman elected to public office in the U.S., advocating for intersectional justice. Miss Major Griffin-Gracy: Transgender activist fighting for the rights of trans women of color and decentering whiteness in the LGBTQ+ movement. Quote of the Day: "The master's tools will never dismantle the master's house." – Audre Lorde Decentering whiteness is not about excluding white-skinned people but about removing the limited lens imposed by white supremacy. This approach enriches our movements, making them more inclusive and effective. ?? Read more and join the conversation on my Substack newsletter ???Upcoming Workshop!???
