Two Saturdays ago: Sept, 2024, I was among those privileged to sit to watch the parade of leaders address us in the Closing Ceremony of UN SUMMIT OF THE FUTURE ACTION DAYS. The Venue: ECOSOC COUNCIL CHAMBER, UN HEADQUARTERS, NEW YORK as a rep of the World Futures Studies Federation. The Action Days Sept 20-21 served as a launchpad for the Summit of the Future, which followed. Sept 22-23. The energy in the hallways during the Action Days was palpable. Thousands of optimists swarming the UN to breathe new life into a concept built for the 20th Century that must be revitalized for the 21st Century. All in all, I bathed in the energy of hope and audacity that prevailed among us, praying that the formal components of the Summit, and the solutions we advanced would be adopted in a Pact for the Future that would initiate our journey towards a more effective and inclusive model of multilateralism. It was adopted not unanimously, but it was adopted. Now the real work begins. We know it will be hard, but we choose to believe that we can be a successful generation in human civilization as she puts it. We need a paradigm shift. The Future is a Global Common. #SMARTFutures S=Solidarity, M=Mutuality, A=Altruism, R=Reciprocity, T=Trust #WethePeoples have a #SharedFuture It is 8 Billion people wide and 1 Humanity Strong. Like Mottley, I believe we are at an Inflection Point, but if we don't make the effort we will perish as one great flock of the condemned. We need an #Ubuntu Alliance. My Book 'SMART Futures For a Flourishing World' lays out a framework to achieving this. #WethePeoples brought to New York (in person and virtually) as the members of the Commonwealth of Humanity, the third leg of multilateralism otherwise known as the Plural Sector (that includes cooperatives, professional associations, chambers of commerce, foundations, clubs, religious orders, think tanks, activist NGOs, service NGOs and so on) HIGH hopes. We left at home our tears and fears and brought with us our high hopes that working together we can find a third way to Win and Win for a Just Future for all of us. As I sit here ruminating on how to keep going amidst the onslaught of anti-Black immigrant rhetoric being spouted by the leaders of this country, I decided to marinate my mind in words of encouragement from the Gospel of Hope by our beloved sister Mia Amor Mottley. She did not sound like any other President or Prime Minister I know. She sounded like one of us. We cannot afford to give up. We cannot afford the luxury of sitting down. Freedom is not Free. It takes work. The Future of the American Dream of an ever more perfect Union is at stake. We cannot afford to Go Back. I still have to pinch myself when I see my name among such distinguished company... ?? Today, I will be speaking at the European Economic and Social Committee's event on the future of the Sustainable Development Goals #SDGs in a fragmented and multipolar world. I will give an overview of this Commission's achievements in advancing the #SDGs over the last four years, not least their integration into the European Semester cycle of economic governance and the publication of the first-ever EU Voluntary Review on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the EU. Today Viable Cities participated in the conference on Translating the Green Deal into Local Action held during the Belgian EU presidency. Through signing the Declaration of European local and regional leaders the Mayors present sent a clear message to European policymakers to embed the local level in the heart of the Green Deal. A new multilevel governance framework was asked for, with bridges between the EU initiatives and more direct funding solutions. Other topics raised were fair transition, engagement of industry and citizens, communication, added values, climate adaptation and one-stop-shop funding.
