A new report from The Commonwealth Fund highlights a disturbing reality: firearm death rates in some U.S. states now compare to countries facing civil unrest or gang violence. We are past the point where our governments must respond forcefully. Incredibly, this girls school has been targeted for a third time this year. Putting aside the cowardice and depravity of shooting at a school, it is clear that our tolerance for the hatred and criminal behaviour on our streets has emboldened these pathetic people to act violently. There is no sugarcoating this - these are acts of terrorism. Terrorism, by definition in the Criminal Code, is an act that is for a political, religious or ideological purpose, with the intention of intimidating the public, with regard to its security, i.e. to terrorize people. Shooting at a girls' school, on multiple occasions, has a very obvious message. Enough cowardice from our government officials. Be leaders, and lead. Uphold our laws and stop trying to placate people who have no interest in reason, compromise or peace. No one is voting for you if you're too weak to stand behind Canadian values. It shouldn't have to be said, but be brave enough to do what is right, and take action NOW.

So what’s happening here? We can all learn from these types of incidents. Past research suggests that when in groups we are less likely to intervene. What’s becoming clear is that is not always the case. This is especially true when the event is clear, harm is taking place place. In unclear situations people still hold back. The perils of ambiguity is a clear inhibitor in some cases. Here we see a clear event and bystanders intervening. Harnessing the presence of others can help clarify a situation but also get help. This can help keep us safe but help address even ambiguous situations. Recently we’ve seen similar in likes of the Bondi attacks in Sydney When we are aware of our surroundings, those around us as well as our sense that something is wrong we can move from a passive role to one of action. Line any other skill “Active bystandership” can be trained and quickly become a muscle memory
