What do we mean by vulnerable in a high-performing team this context? The willingness to ‘bare your soul’, say what’s really on your mind, share your fears and hopes without fear of criticism or judgement. Most people will only be willing to do this if they feel safe - they trust the people they are with sufficiently to be ‘vulnerable’. So how do people establish this trust in others? We talk about two types of trust: predictive and affective. Predictive is a logical form of trust (what your head is telling you). It's based on reputation, past performance, qualifications, and experience. Affective trust is a more emotional form of trust (what your heart is telling you). It's based on subjective judgments and drives decisions like whether you would open up about failure, weaknesses, and fears. You can have one type of trust without the other, but you need both. Just because someone’s got a stellar reputation or a great CV doesn’t automatically mean you will trust them enough be be ‘vulnerable’. You probably need to get to know them and build a deeper relationship based on mutual understanding and respect. That’s why vulnerability matters in teams, because it’s a certain indicator that affective trust is present and people will be honest and authentic with one another.

In instances where trust in leadership is questionable the cohesive nature of the team is inevitably compromised.?? Consequently, trust can be construed contextually as a crucial element that unifies team dynamics, leading to the fulfillment and surpassing of productivity expectations . ??
