“And I feel bad for Ahab as well, because he thinks that his life will be better if he can just kill this whale, but in reality it won’t help him at all.” That’s a line in Aronofsky’s film 'The Whale' (adapted from Samuel D. Hunter’s play of the same name). It’s from a child’s essay on Moby Dick that main character Charlie loves. He loves the essay because it’s “honest”. ? Most goals I’ve achieved are as pointless as hunting “a poor, big animal,” but they’re not as grand in scale. Examples: ? Getting into a top university – did private school get me over the line? And the charm that blossoms from inherited wealth and Aryan features? ? Getting an internship in a conglomerate – did it help that I spent the interview talking about my work experience in a bank, and not mentioning I’d acquired this through family connections? ? Getting a job at a Russia flavoured UK fintech – did the Patagonia jacket I wore in all six interviews make the right impression? Or was it the rote learned facts from Wikipedia? In any case, six months into the job I still didn’t know how many business customers the company had I don’t view the experiences directly associated with the above achievements as useful or entertaining. Perhaps that’s why I didn’t go to my graduation. What I look back on as valuable are a collection of miscellaneous events where I abandoned dignity and learned something about human nature, the borders of permissibility and how invigorating they are. These include: ? An indefensible, highly personal rant at the superiors in my recruitment job, resulting in a circus of tears and ad hoc HR meetings that culminated in my being fired. I felt very alive ? An affair I had. After the first time, early evening sunlight poured into the tube carriage on my way home, which I imagined as a divine signal. There was no punishment. There rarely is ? A detention where I shared my opinion that my classmates were like ants. My teacher looked at me as though I was unhinged. I learned that to deny individuality in others was a worse crime than rudeness or insubordination In Knausgaard’s 'The End', he writes: “What was freedom? To be free was to transgress. To identify everything as being subject to constraints, stuck, ossified, and to remove oneself from that.” Maybe that’s why my memories of transgression are so much more powerful and life-affirming than my memories of trophy-like achievements. The memories of transgression pertain to freedom, those of achieving my long-term goals to the prison of respectability. But I still have whales I wish to kill. I want to continue writing, and see how far I can go with it.

I’ll brag on him because he won’t brag on himself. Being a good leader is not barking orders or thinking you’re “above doing jobs” especially interms of ranch work. The ranch we work for hires 3 interns a semester and we rely on them for the daily operations of the ranch. In return they get the opportunity to learn from a 6th generation family- owned seed stock operation, ride good horses, eat ranch raised beef and hopefully make life long memories. I feel as though there is a misconception among employers that interns are “free labor” or are meant to do the “crappy jobs.” And although there are times I’m sure they’d rather be gathering cattle horseback verses cleaning feed bunks, scooping manure or fixing waterlines, it’s important to us they know all the facets and responsibilities of managing a ranch. It’s even more important they have some who leads by example and is willing to do the not so fun jobs right next to them, regardless of what those might be. Being in a position of power such as a ranch foreman, it’s your job to manage the team, complete projects, run daily operations efficiently and make important decisions. It would definitely be easier to delegate all the piddly jobs to the interns but what will they gain from that ? One of my key roles for the ranch is coordinating the ranch internship program. This means helping interview, select applicants, help them move in, and it feels as though I’m “mom away from home” during their time here. We view this internship program as an investment. An investment in young adults who are the future of this industry and if we can mold them and teach them as much as we can, it will only benefit our industry as a whole. On multiple occasions we have called on previous interns for work, employment or potential opportunities. We have had past interns become bull customers, manage neighboring ranches, work for breed associations, become nutritionist, vets, and more that we call and use to service the ranch. We have cultivated lifelong friendships with these interns. We want these interns to leave here and make another ranch and business proud to have them. We want our interns to leave feeling confident, and as though they have gained life long skills. More than that we want them to leave knowing how to work well as a team to accomplish the same goal. I admire my husband, Tell Ruggles for striving to lead this way in his position as ranch foreman and for creating an environment for these interns to learn and have fun while doing it. Don’t forget.. even the greatest was once a beginner.
