why do we, leading academics, need to do everything for free, no matter if it is our nights, weekends, summer holidays, or free time? why do we always need to sponsor everything and everyone with our time: (fee charging) conferences with our free keynotes (expensive) journals with our papers and intellectual property (that WE are paying for rather than us getting paid for it!!!) (expensive) journals with our free reviews summer schools with our (free or almost free) teaching, from our valuable holidays media with our interviews, expertise funders by our proposal reviews (sustainability) award juries with our time and expertise and brand names corporate or NGO advisory or even governing boards with our time, names and expertise and the list can go on and on and on, without an end - what are you requested for free? None of this is in our contracts, noone is paying us for these. I get absolutely natural requests a few times a day for another free service of this and that kind that, while extremely important and great privilege - will actually create financial value for someone else. It is so humiliating to keep trying to make the point that also for me the day consist of only 24 hours, and also for me the food is for money in the grocery store, and also for me the trainers or music teachers of my children charge money. Why is it that our time is expected to be donated as standard practice, while others are, sometimes richly, benefiting from it? why is it not the standard practice that our time is extremely valuable and the value we create should be at least compensated for fully, or even more fairly, a fair share of the extra revenue we help the institutions/projects with our expertise being channeled back to us? Why are we, academics, keep silently heeding to, and normalising, this 21st century exploitation every day, without a raise of an eyebrow? if you agree that this is not right, please reshare it, and add your story.
