Missouri / August 12, 2024 / St. Louis Post-Dispatch / Kurt Erickson — Governor Mike Parson’s administration has allocated $243,750 to purchase 21 additional license #plate readers in an effort to bolster law enforcement capabilities during a period of personnel shortages. This contract, with Atlanta-based Flock #Safety, took effect on August 1, 2024, expanding a program that began in 2023 with the installation of 43 license plate readers across 11 rural counties in mid-Missouri.
The new deployment of license plate readers is intended to enhance the ability of the Missouri State #Highway Patrol to track and apprehend suspects in various criminal activities, including homicides, abductions, and human trafficking cases. Despite efforts to increase trooper wages by over 20% in recent years, the state’s police force continues to face challenges in recruiting new officers, with a shortfall of more than 100 troopers reported in 2022.
While law enforcement officials praise the technology for its effectiveness, civil liberties advocates and some state lawmakers express concerns about potential privacy violations. Earlier this year, Senator Mike Cierpiot introduced legislation to limit the use of license plate readers, citing fears of government overreach. However, the measure did not advance.
The cameras, which are now being utilized in several counties and cities across Missouri and neighboring Illinois, capture a vehicle’s license plate, make, model, color, and other identifying features. The information collected is used exclusively to track vehicles involved in criminal activities, with data lists updated every 15 minutes.
Despite the controversy, the technology has already proven its value, aiding in the arrest of suspects and the resolution of various crimes across the state and beyond.
