Advocate for Deaf Children ~ Diversity & Inclusion ~ British Sign Language ~ Small Business Owner ~ Open to Project /Contract Work ~ Volunteer
I was asked by the #bslinourhands campaign to make a video on why early access to sign language is important for Deaf children and their families I sign everyday with Theo , it’s our home language but put a camera in front of me and I freeze , so forgive the signing and take the message that early access is vital for families of Deaf children . We were fortunate to be able to pay for lessons to learn, but so many families can’t and their children end up with language deprivation , isolation and mental health problems You can support by clicking the link in the bda website to email your MP to support the campaign for free sign language lessons for families with Deaf children https://lnkd.in/eHdrM-xk Access to British Sign Language for deaf children and their families is a right, not a privilege. We want to put the power of language in every deaf child's hands. #bsl #BSL #bslinourhands #raisingadeafchild #raisingawareness #bda #britishdeafassociation #britishdeaf #inclusiveeducation #InclusiveCommunity #?nclusionmatters #signlanguage #signlanguageweek #families #whose #familieswhosign #raisingbilingualkids #raisingbilingualchildren #deafcan #removingbarriers

Do you have questions or other tips to promote Deaf Awareness? Let’s have them in the comments. Happy Deaf Awareness Month!

Until a few years ago when my son was born, I knew nothing about deafness.?Like most people I had elderly relatives who were losing their hearing and who joked about their “deaf side” but I had very little appreciation of how inaccessible the world can be for the deaf community. This week it is Deaf Awareness Week.?12 million adults (1 in 5) and 50,000 kids in the UK are deaf so it pays for us all to be more aware and inclusive. If you work with someone who is deaf, then here are 5 easy tips: 1.??????Ask them what they need and how they want to communicate. 2.??????Make sure you have their attention before you speak to them. 3.??????Allow them to see your face clearly to read your lips and expressions.?Don’t stand in front of a bright window or insist on having the lights low during a presentation. 4.??????If they don’t hear you first time – please don’t say “never mind”. 5.??????Speak one at a time.?A room full of voices is hard to follow. As an aside, if you have young kids and want to teach them more about deaf awareness then I suggest getting the book Freddie and the Fairy by Julia Donaldson – I have adult friends who have found this useful too! If you’re interested in learning more then there are some great resources from the National Deaf Children’s Society - https://lnkd.in/eHQSXPYh How deaf aware do you think you and your workplace are?

?? What is the difference between deaf and Deaf? One of the fundamental distinctions within the Deaf community is the capitalization of the word “Deaf.” When spelled with a capital “D,” Deaf refers to individuals who identify themselves as members of Deaf culture. They may have been born Deaf or become part of the community through shared experiences, language, and cultural connections. On the other hand, when spelled with a lowercase “d,” the term “deaf” is used to describe the audiological condition of not hearing. #Deafness #DeafCulture #DeafAwareness #DeafAccess #Accessibility

Carrying on the theme for the Deaf Awareness Month-When a deaf person asks for an accommodation for an interpreter. This is how they feel, and why. When you accommodate, you are connecting your world to theirs. A link. A bridge. How would you feel if your ears wasn't working, and you felt...left out? ???????????????????? THE VIEW. When I sit here With my quiet ears And use my eyes to see the world The words float by aimlessly As I search for clues from the speaker Feeling lonely I am Isolated from the world that only stands inches from me. I look forward to this person That bridges my world to theirs This person easily speaks the words that gently float in the air Slowly making me feel wanted By the world. Minute by minute. The expression formed on this person's face Tells me a story created instantly The minute it leaves the speakers mouth Making my imagination and thoughts more vivid each second Calm sway tender motion by this person's hands the arms are a nonverbal mystery to the outside world, but it flows sweetly and is musical to my eyes Creating an easy image for me to hear Breaking down a barrier between two worlds My world does not feel so quiet anymore All the thanks to this person Who tries daily by creating invisible bridges So that the two worlds can link up. What is Deaf Awareness? Deaf awareness does what it says on the tin! There are millions of deaf people in the world, yet deaf individuals often face challenges linked to communication barriers and stigmatisation. Deaf awareness means becoming more aware of these challenges and working to be a more inclusive society where the deaf community can thrive and contribute fully. By becoming deaf-aware, we promote equality, as it acknowledges the rights of deaf people to access information, education, and services without discrimination. To learn more about deaf awareness, read our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/eaau3zeP If you'd like to expand your knowledge further, why not enrol on our CPD-approved deaf awareness short course: https://lnkd.in/e_EqDRy6 #DeafAwareness #DeafAwarenessCourse #CompleteTraining #Training

I would love to know! Especially if you're a Deaf person, do you like this sign for Agape Pah or not. I know that it's culturally appropriate for only Deaf people to give name signs to people/ things, but I'm open to thoughts from hearing people too. What is Agape Pah? It's the business I have started to help bridge the Deaf World with the world's of hearing service providers to provide better services to the Deaf World. It includes courses/ training and will have an online membership community starting this spring. Agape is Greek for unconditional love. Pah is a "Deaf word" for success (or finally, or at last) The reason that this is the name of my business is that I believe we can all be more successful if we have unconditional love for each other that does not depend on hearing/ Deaf, etc. #poll #namesign #newbusiness #onlinebusiness #Deaf
