Today, as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his dream of equity and inclusion, we stand on the threshold of a new era: the Intelligence Age. This is a time where technology and innovation are reshaping the way we live, work, and connect. But with all progress comes responsibility. We cannot afford to leave anyone behind. Not our seniors, not our low-income communities, not anyone who may feel disconnected or overwhelmed by these rapid advancements. Dr. King’s vision reminds us that progress is only meaningful when it includes everyone. Some of us are in powerful rooms or just have an appetitive to learn and ‘pick up’ stuff everyday. Whether it’s a new tool, a skill, or insight, we all have platforms—big or small—to empower others. The Intelligence Age thrives on knowledge, and knowledge grows when it’s shared. The Challenge: ?Learn something new in your area(s) of expertise everyday. Everyone is a SME in something. Stay in your God given lane. ?Share it. Vet it first and add what you know for sure to it. The copy and paste days must end. ?Use your platform to uplift, educate, and connect. Social media is clearly a priority and not going anywhere, so we might as well use it wisely. Dr. King said, “Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” In this new era, we have the tools to uplift everyone, and it’s our duty to ensure no one is left behind. In full transparency, when I first saw the bus, I told my MaaPaa Community, ‘That’s not our bus, don’t get too excited. Ours is probably on the other side of the building.’ As a nonprofit, I’m accustomed to seeing school buses, the short ones, or even the ones with just three wheels. But I have to give a huge shout-out to DOPE for showing our children that they deserve beautiful transportation. “Why should I donate?” Because donating to grassroots organizations like Yellowhammer Fund means resources goes back into the communities. It gives parents in need access to family support resources. It gives people the ability to minimize their risk of STIs and unintended pregnancy by having access to contraceptives. It builds community infrastructure and relationships by taking the time to get to know the people they serve as we travel to places often neglected by their government and mainstream organizations. Your donation funds an organization that doesn’t just talk about the harms of economic insecurity within our communities but also ensures that it’s pay model practices what it preaches. Fund locally. Fund with folks who show in their work they’re intentional about trying to change the material conditions of their communities. Don’t fund for show. Fund for change.

Last night was very humbling. I had the opportunity to return to the place that gave me the tools to restart my life, and I will forever be grateful for that. Since it is Movember, which focuses on Mens Health, I have a story to share. I recently passed the 6yr mark of sobriety, but it felt a bit different this year. The first 5 years of sobriety, I took it very seriously and put all my effort into changing my frame of mind from very negative to positive. After receiving my 5-year medallion last year, things changed. I started taking every aspect of my life for granted because my life on paper looked great. I didn't take my sobriety and spirituality serious, my ego was telling me, "Jeff, you don't need that anymore. You got this." I was isolating myself and didn't reach out to my positive influences, which led to months of depression and recently planning my demise. Normal people would say, "You have a great life, how could you be depressed?" I suffer from depression because I'm not one of the normal people. I've suffered from depression since I was 13 years old, but fortunately, I now have the tools to recover. I share this because many men don't have the tools available. Please, if you're suffering inside, make a call and talk to someone. It may save your life. Well this is *kinda* like that but instead of the scary end part, the result is positive community impact. Maine Needs is a community funded effort. Last year, 81% of our funding came from you in the form of $5 monthly donations, small & large one-time gifts, lemonade stand sales, fundraisers, and everything in between. From now until the end of the year, we're trying to reach 1,000 supporters for our Capacity Campaign; our first big fundraiser. We're asking you to give whatever you can and to SHARE to your stories & feed and to TAG friends and family who can also give. Giving to this campaign is a way to stay connected to and involved in this community effort.
