Saying yes when you’re not ready In 2012, I had just graduated from my MBA in Taiwan where I had been living for two years. Although I am originally from the Philippines, Taiwan was my second home. I had a good circle of friends, I lived in a nice neighbourhood in the city, and I loved the convenience of 24/7 food available at every corner! I wanted to stay in Taiwan long-term, so I decided to start sending out job applications. One evening, a recruiter from Asus, a consumer electronics company, called and asked if I was interested in attending their recruitment drive, which was already happening the next day. Although I had no time to prep, I said yes. The next morning, I found myself at Asus headquarters with other 100+ applicants. Clueless and not knowing what to expect, I just had to wing it. Six months later, I get a call from the hiring manager, asking if I would be interested in joining Asus as a product marketing executive.?I was so happy to hear the news! This was a great role for a multi-national company. But there was a catch: the role would be based in Singapore. I was definitely not ready to leave Taiwan. In addition, I had no idea about Singapore. It was a completely new market. My thoughts were: how could I possibly be successful in this role? I had to move my life and start from scratch in a completely new country. Yet again, I said yes! 11 years later, I’ve built a home in Singapore, grown my career, and have been saying yes to many more opportunities that I thought I wasn’t ready for. This had led me to: ? Work in the most advanced global Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Data Center companies? ? Collaborate with various government organisations such as Interpol, FBI, Monetary Authority of Singapore, and the British High Commission ? Grow brands that have expanded into the Asia Pacific region and lead its marketing initiatives I’m waiting for my next yes to see what opportunities lie ahead! Have you said yes to something you weren’t ready for yet? #CareerJourney #OriginStory #SayYes
Definitely a yes girl too! Love your story Kim
Wow, I now understand your connection between Philippines, Taiwan and Singapore. Thanks for sharing Kim Veronica Yu!!!
Congratulations Kim, can't wait to see what's next
Kim Veronica Yu what a great story and achievement. The next opportunity could be knocking on your door real soon.
You wing it and win it! ??
Love this story! Sometimes, taking that leap is all it takes to discover your true potential. Just like saying "yes" first and figuring it out later, even when it’s uncomfortable and nerve-wracking but exciting. Keep it up!
Congratulations, dear Kim to this major achievement – I had a similar experience many years ago when my boss pushed me into a higher position. I felt not ready at all, but in the end this was a golden opportunity which led to massive development. I am always thankful for that.
I love those not-quite-ready-yet type of YESes. I've done the same myself a few times in my life from moving to Asia as a fresh grad with 2 hands in my pocket, to joining a start up company as employee number 4. That little tingeling feeling, that discomfort, is often a guide that I'm on the right path. Next level of challenge unlocked ????
