We have great communities, great leaders and amazing residents who fill these buildings BUT the majority of the ways we sell and package senior living doesn't reflect this. As an industry it's time to embrace the journey of change - it's tough, but oh-so-worth-it! ?? But how? 1? Get more personal with your marketing efforts (it's not one size fits all). 2? Talk to your residents (find out what they like, what makes your community stand out to them.) 3? Have fun! Yes, there's challenges to working in this space but if we don't work on depicting joy, how can we expect others to want to take part? The true measure of success in senior living!! By Stephen Deraney PhD Everyone is aware how companies measure success in senior living and that is all tied to financial performance but is that all we care about? Of course it is our responsibility to ensure financial viability and management of resources but I have always maintained that setting the right priorities will ensure growth and retention which enhances the bottom line. As an experienced Executive Director, I have always looked at the community as a whole to see if we are doing our job. Here are my thoughts about the true measures of success. First are the residents thriving, emotionally, physically and spiritually? Are your residents positive about the dining experiences and the engagement opportunities? Do your residents feel that they are free to express their opinions to leadership and actually see results? Are the residents pleased with the cleaning, laundry and maintenance responses? As I interact with families, it is important to see if the themes of the conversations are positive or negative. Lastly it is important to gauge the staff morale and turnover. If staff performs well, then residents are generally well taken care of in our setting. These are just a few of my thoughts on community viability. People are living longer and that means there isn't just a cost for the people getting older (i.e. they need a paycheck), but there is a broader societal cost in paying for people who are denied the opportunity to stay productive. In a meeting with a colleague the conversation of placemaking came up. We discussed the concept of the "third place" - that meeting ground where people come together that is not their home, not their work or school. The street, the piazza, the town square - the places where our lives can intersect. Where does Community Renewal fit in the placemaking conversation? Of course people need spaces to gather. That is clear. Placemaker leader, David Engwicht, says: "Placemaking is like turning a house into a home." But what is a home if we don't put relationships front and center? At the core of the placemaking conversation must be how those places can inspire, encourage, enlighten, develop, nourish, initiate relationships between human beings. If spaces do that, then we have a vibrant community reflected within them. The more human beings begin to think about the relationship between us, the more the places we meet -- or the places we build -- will reflect what is most important: that we create communities that lift each of us to our highest level of capacity and fulfilled potential.
