But, Kiley Houck, MSW, CHC why name your business “Kiley’s Health Haven”? Because it’s a name rooted in purpose! In my previous career, many of you know I was a Social Worker. And my last job in the field, I worked as a crisis intervention specialist. I focused on aiding individuals who were seeking shelter, fleeing from domestic violence and sexual assault. They were looking for a haven. A sanctuary from fear, danger, and chaos. A place where they could let their guard down, knowing they were finally safe. As I transitioned into health and wellness coaching, my commitment to providing that safe space stayed with me. “Kiley’s Health Haven” is more than just a name; it’s a mission. My goal is to offer a refuge where women can: - Escape the stress food brings them - Remove the unrealistic expectations dieting has made them believe - Discard the fear of never being “good”, “worthy”, “skinny”, “smart”, and/or “strong” enough - Prove food is not the enemy, but a friend - Show how emotions can define eating habits - Create a life where eating brings joy and pleasure, not shame and guilt Here, we find peace with our bodies and reclaim our power over food. And we do so, not with rules and restrictions, but through understanding and connection. Plus, the alliteration of “Health Haven” with my last name “Houck” was serendipitous. Almost like a sign that this was the right path. And today, I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life! At the end of a long, tiring day at the clinic, it's common to hear people say things like, "You deserve a huge glass of wine, your favorite takeout, and a Netflix binge." While these short-term coping strategies may feel comforting in the moment, they don’t fall under the umbrella of self-care. Self-care, unlike temporary coping mechanisms, is a long-term investment in your overall health and wellbeing. While indulging in a treat or zoning out with a show isn’t inherently "wrong," these behaviors are often short-lived and do little to restore your body and mind for the days ahead. In fact, when used consistently as a go-to response to stress or exhaustion, they can set you in a cycle of avoidance, where true self-care feels difficult, far-off, or even unattainable. Self-care practices, on the other hand, are designed to promote your health across the eight dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, social, intellectual, occupational, financial, and environmental. They can sometimes be uncomfortable, require some planning, and even feel like a chore—but they’re the kind of practices that nurture your wellbeing in a meaningful way. Examples include: ?? Scheduling doctor or counselor appointments ?? Spending time in nature ?? Connecting with a friend over coffee ?? Reading or learning something new ??♀? Setting healthy boundaries at work ?? Organizing your finances ?? Decluttering your space To make sure these self-care practices become consistent and truly beneficial, we need to plan for them—not just hope they happen. While they may not always feel immediately gratifying, over time, these healthy habits build resilience and restore your energy in a way that binge-watching or stress-eating never will. If you’re ready to start incorporating more restorative self-care into your routine, download our free PDF, 10 Ways to Relax After a Long Veterinary Shift. Get the PDF: https://lnkd.in/gtGERvwe Remember: self-care isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity for those of us working in veterinary care. It’s not selfish—it’s essential. Prioritize your self-care today so you don’t find yourself relying on short-term coping strategies tomorrow. #TipTuesday #VeterinaryWellness #VeterinaryWellbeing #Relaxation #SelfCare #CopingStrategies #RevivingVetMed

Staff wellbeing, a nice to have or a must? I've been supporting the herd a lot the last couple of weeks because their wellbeing took a nosedive. The problem? In a nutshell, too much stress, not enough support. Sources of stress for horses are: Diet Confinement The energetic state of the people and other horses they interact with The mood of the nation The weather Underlying health conditions Injuries from exercising Lack of choice. That list above could equally apply to people. I was surprised to observe earlier this year an organisation that demonstrated wellbeing is a nice to have, but not a must for their staff. It was very much, 'if anything is left in the kitty (energeticically or financially) then we'll focus on wellbeing.' Guess what? There was hardly ever any resource left for wellbeing, so their staff were frequently off sick, feeling overworked and resentful or looking for another employer. I get it. Prioritising people over outcomes is HARD, especially in the current economic climate. But when you get overwhelming feedback like my herd have given this month, you have to do the right thing and change your priorities. Expert advice from multiple sources has been sought. More is booked in. Changes have been made. New boundaries and parameters have been put in place. We're chalking this one up to experience. After all it's the first time we've lived through 2024, how were we to know? So in order to preserve the health and wellbeing of the herd, they are on minimal duties until 17th July and then their diary is booked out for a holiday until the 1st August. I will probably take a holiday too. Our health and wellbeing comes first. Even when they're not at their best, the horses are still teaching us to be better humans... #wellbeing #workplacewellbeing #stress

?? World Mental Health Day 10th October: The Power of Mood-Boosting Food for Emotional Health ?? This week, with World Mental Health Day on Thursday 10th October, it's a good time to reflect on how we can take proactive steps to support mental wellbeing. Mental health isn't just about addressing challenges when they arise—it's about prevention. And one of the most overlooked yet impactful ways we can do this is through the food we eat. For years, I neglected my nutrition and the effects on my mental health were undeniable. The food we consume directly impacts the hormones that regulate our mood, emotions, and overall mental wellbeing. This is why mood-boosting food is so vital in keeping our emotional balance in check. While many organisations focus on providing counselling and therapy services, we believe prevention is key. Equipping employees with the knowledge to make better dietary choices can be a game-changer in preventing mental health issues from escalating. As food scientists and nutritionists specialising in functional medicine, our team is committed to empowering organisations with practical tools to promote better health. Throughout September and in the run-up to World Mental Health Day, we have been presenting a special 'Mood-Boosting Food' series—highlighting how nutrition can help safeguard mental health. If you're looking to enhance employee wellbeing and create a happier, healthier workplace, we invite you to connect with us. Let’s set up a presentation and explore how we can support your team in making positive, lasting health choices. Together, we can foster a culture of wellbeing, where nutrition is the foundation for better mental health. Making time for rest feels time-wasting and irresponsible sometimes. Do you ever feel that way? As a 50-year-old post-menopausal woman, trained RN and health coach, you would think I would just be over that already! I wish I could tell you that it's become easier for me to choose rest. That it comes naturally. That I consistently follow through and walk the health coach talk when it comes to putting my needs first (or at least on the schedule). But I’m human. And in reality, and all honesty, that all takes intention. And working through barriers. And oftentimes, A LOT of back-and-forth conversations in my own head when it comes to giving myself permission to rest. And then there’s that guilt and shame around not doing ‘enough’. So much nonsense to wade through! Life feels incredibly exhausting and unstable to me right now... the political landscape, the turmoil of extended family happenings and the ridiculously fast-paced nature of our culture all tug at my heart when it comes to quieting those voices in my head that try to hijack any intentions to integrate rest into my daily routine. Maybe you’re on a similar exhausting path? I KNOW that rest is important. And I believe that you do too. The science is clear around that. And yet some days it’s so hard to come by. And yet, my health is EVERYTHING to me – especially if I want to be able to keep gardening, hiking, kayaking, traveling, nurturing my own family members and friends - young and old, prioritizing my health is crucial, as I can imagine it is for you. As I write, I feel my eyes getting heavy from the day’s activities already. And it’s only noon on Tuesday. I have a list that I’ve only gotten a few things checked off for the day, but I’m prioritizing finding a quiet corner in my home to shut my eyes for at least 20 minutes. Because contrary to popular culture, rest is NOT time-wasting or irresponsible or lazy. It’s NECESSARY for so many facets of our wellbeing; physically, emotionally and mentally. Rest is paramount to how we keep going and healing and showing up for the life we long for – for ourselves and our loved ones. The work that I get to do as a coach DIRECTLY supports you with getting clear on the driving force behind why you want your health - and I'm grateful for the reminder to do the same. To walk that talk. So that you know you’re dealing with a real human on the other end of the line, email or our social media interactions. And so it’s worth repeating that question I keep encouraging you to explore this summer: Why is your health important to you? I hope this finds you giving your own self permission to rest. And as always, I hope you are taking good care, and finding ways to put your needs first this summer... I’ll be one of the first to cheer you on for that (right after I get my nap)! #perimenopausesupport #womenshealthcoach #healthcoachingforwomen ##menopausesupport #choosehealth #womenshealt #restandrecharge #BurnoutPrevention

August is all about healthy eating with our EAP partner, Assure. The mental health and well-being of our colleagues and contractor workforce is a priority to Scotford Fennessy, hence why we partner with Assure as our EAP. Each month Assure focuses on a theme and pairs that with interactive resources. The focus for August is "healthy eating". "We all know that eating well, regular exercise, and good sleep are fundamental to our health and wellbeing. A healthy diet is essential for good health and nutrition. It helps protect us from many chronic diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancers, and can prevent us from becoming overweight and obese and the health risks that these are associated with. Eating well also gives us more energy for longer, and generally helps us feel good – physically and mentally."?https://loom.ly/B1cD6VI With Assure, our employees, contractors, and their families have 24/7 access to mental wellness resources, counselling, and more. #employeewellbeing?#healthyeating?#mentalhealthmatters #workplacewellness?#wellnessjourney?#healthandwellbeing

After taking some quiet time yesterday and reading responses across our social media platforms, I felt a sense of relief about emotional eating to deal with the stresses that come with caregiving. The best reminder: I’m not alone, and neither are you! Stress often brings back old habits—whether it's overeating, not eating enough, too much sleep, or not enough. Caregiving can be stressful, and we all cope in our own ways. Here are great start steps to getting back on track when stress eating and caregiving collide. 1. Breakfast – I don’t love breakfast, but when I skip it, I end up snacking on fruit loops and cheese. I can’t tackle stress eating if I’m actually hungry! I’m a protein shake fan—Chike Mocha Coffee is my go-to. Breakfast starts tomorrow! 2. 15 Minutes – Now this says 15 but I guarantee you I waste 30 when I get up just catching up on emails and social media. STOP! If I have time to look at what I missed over the last 8 hours, I've got time to grab my favorite mug of pens and a new study. I like something that encourages me personally and if I drink my breakfast at the same time, 2 birds with one stone! 3. Don’t Eat Alone – I’m a “sneaky eater,” but eating with others helps. It’s harder to overeat Oreos or chug chocolate syrup when you’re not alone! 4. Get Outside – It’s not about exercise but SUNSHINE! When I’m struggling, I tend to hide away. I love buying bright, bold tennis shoes and wearing them, even around the house. Check out Amy Buschatz's "Humans Outside." 20 minutes outside a day—it’s my new mission! 5. Keep Track – Holding myself accountable is key. At the end of the day, I can reflect on what I did right and what I could improve—like skipping those fruit loops! 6. Get Dressed! – When you’re down, especially working from home, it’s easy to stay in stretchy pants. They’re not my friend! I’m getting back to getting ready, just like when I worked outside the home—minus the heels! Lastly, laugh. Be as kind to yourself as you are to others. Find people who understand, like my sweet sister Emilie. One day, I confessed my food sins to her, and she laughed: "J, I ordered a whole pizza BUT only ate the toppings!" She’s my silver lining. Keep looking for yours!

Flip the Script This Holiday Season: Write a "To-Be" List Instead of a "To-Do" List! The holidays are here, and your to-do list probably looks like a tangled string of lights—never-ending and kind of stressful. But what if you hit pause on all the doing and focused on who you want to be instead? Enter the To-Be List: a way to shift your focus from "Get things done!" to "Be the person I want to be." Here’s how it works: think about how you want to show up this holiday season. Do you want to be calm instead of frazzled? Generous instead of grumpy? Present instead of scrolling Instagram under the table during dinner? Write those words down. Keep them where you can see them—taped to your fridge, stuck to your mirror, or even as your phone wallpaper. The magic of a To-Be List is that it grounds you in the moment and reminds you what really matters. Because let’s face it, no one’s going to remember if you forgot to get a gift for the dogs, but they will remember if you were warm, kind, and fully there. So go ahead, make the list. Be the light, the calm, the joy. And hey, if you forget a few to-dos? That’s what store-bought cookies are for. Wednesday Wellbeing Welcome to August’s Wednesday Wellbeing. August is a month when everything seems to slow down and you tend to be in holiday mode, making the most of summer, and the long nights while you can. You may have felt freer, maybe less constrained to do the things that are expected of you, and maybe spending more time having fun. This leads to his month’s focus on ways you can let go of people pleasing behaviours and feel more free to be yourself. But what is people pleasing and how does it affect you? If you spend a lot of your time saying yes when you want to say no, worrying about what other people think of you and trying to please everyone else so you can feel good about yourself, it’s likely you’ve become caught up in people pleasing . Of course, we all want other people to like us, to fit it and to be accepted, but people pleasing means putting your own needs firmly at the back of the queue and this can have negative effects on your health and wellbeing. So how to stop? The first step is to understand what you do and don’t want to do. To do this, you’ll need get clear on your boundaries. Clear some time for yourself to think about what you really want to be doing and write down what your limits are and get clear on them in your own mind. Then you can clearly and concisely communicate your boundaries to other people. It helps to be clear and specific about what you’re willing to take on, and when. If it seems like someone is asking for too much, let them know unambiguously this time you won’t be able to help. It can help to practice what you are going to say beforehand. I love when people ask me these kinds of questions because they get a chance to know the real person behind the business!
