Underemployment? Littered with stark realism, I would imagine the figures will only continue to rise. The piece suggests no solution, simply an anomaly and an asterisk against 2020 - I'm not comfortable with that. Personally I'm taking a different approach! #covid19impacts #employment
Wow, thank you all for the comments. An article I found most interesting has been totally enhanced by the differing viewpoints displayed. I would say we are all correct in what we've taken from this piece and that each one of us is uniquely different and differing scenarios will suit each of us better. All I really know is that those of us who engage, look to grow, seek opportunity and work hard will be ok, in whatever our future worlds look like. Thank you and Be Safe, Spread Hope
It certainly is a time for reflection of self as well as how others view me differently since I was RIF’d due to Covid. It’s also presented me with a variety of vast choices and experiences with diverse people and opportunities!
I took on my job which is part time and local purely for those reasons. It was a basic admin/facilities kind of role but the boss also knows my experience as a Merchandise Planner. As such the role has developed as I've gone on. I'm now there two years and it has turned into a more analytical role which is my strength. I absolutely love the job, the company and the people. I got lucky but I also worked hard to turn it into something I enjoyed
And I'm really looking into freelancing my documentation and editing skills. There's a growing market for polished communication and now with covid peolle have a new "freedom" to work remotely.
Underemployment can be a gateway to a new career! When I had been unemployed for six months, I chose underemployment (admin assistant) at a small consulting firm. I moved up the ranks and was in charge of LMS and sourcing which launched my career in recruiting and HR. It was truly a gift. (During that time I also pursued my Masters degree and a small, but extremely inexpensive school.)
Can you elaborate a bit on your approach?
It has been an interesting year and allowed me to try a couple of new initiatives I probably wouldn't have started, the #lifespace we are in provided me a comfort to try since this year everything is so unique.
@Kieran I agree somewhat with your comments. Everyone is different though so can not navigate as freely through these extremely challenging times as you and I might. I am not dismissing your perspective but saying however that those who struggle more than you and I may need extra support on many fronts not just financial however critical financial support seems to be at this time we are experiencing now. I think the author is saying that we are in exceptionally extenuating circumstances and anyone looking to get back into the workforce post pandemic will be (or should be) allowed some leeway in their find appropriate work. Aldo I think this us a time of "gresr" reset both on a societal and personal level. Just my perspective on things as them seem to me.
