Yesterday during our team meeting, my clinical supervisor asked us to pick one things in the centre that best represent us now or in the past weeks. We are to explain what the items mean and why we chose that. Followed by, my clinical supervisor asked us to combine what we had shared and the items we have to form a story. I am amazed how each of our ups and downs, strength and struggles can form a story of encouragement and strength to each of us in the team! Visiting our centers is one of my favorite things to do. I’m on track to visit every one of them this year. As odd as it may sound, I’ve had to learn how to to do, and learn how to arrange the visit. On one of my first visits to one of our centers as Chief Clinical Officer, I sat in a waiting room for 15 minutes. No one rolled out a red carpet, or even greeted me! And when I walked around, I didn’t know what to say, I was anxious, and just felt odd. Looking back now, with my ego recovered, I wonder why I ever thought my staff would take time away from their busy days to see what I might want - when I provided no structure or expectations. It’s not their job to support me. It’s my job to support them. Now, when I visit our centers, I share my plan in advance, and I set up dedicated time for anyone who wants to meet with me to come share their feedback. In those meetings, I ask what their pain points are, and how we as leaders can better support our staff in the field…and I get lists of constructive criticism. It’s never fun to see how my choices may have negatively affected our clinicians or technicians, but with feedback in hand, I can start to make the changes that will positively affect them going forward. That’s a whole lot better than walking into a clinic and expecting people to magically bring their questions and concerns to me. It’s our job as leaders to set the conditions where people feel comfortable bringing their feedback. The structure we apply determines if the people in our building feel safe or not.

Had a blast at the Sigma Creating Healthy Work Environments conference this past weekend in D.C. where strategies for improving HWE standards were shared across a continuum from academia into clinical practice. Sentara represented and shared a couple of strategies including the Zen Den @ SVBGH and the systemwide Clinical Nurse Manager program for leader development from Clinical Education & Simulation. https://lnkd.in/gcspyB66
