Alive and Kicking is a network of impactful organisations that share the same purpose, mission and values. Together we use the lifecycle of a sports ball to grow and strengthen communities around the world. Our balls are created to have a positive social impact in the way they are manufactured, distributed and used. They are based in Africa. More than 40% of people in sub-Saharan Africa live below the poverty line, meaning that their income is less than or equal to $1.90 a day. So the aim is to help those in need.? Through the production of balloons, Alive and Kicking creates ethical jobs for adults from vulnerable groups and gives refugees the means to set up their own micro-enterprises. They also ensure that disadvantaged children have free, easy and safe access to sport through Alive and Kicking's inclusive sport programmes. Thanks to the profits made from the sale of their sports balls and additional fund-raising, they give many young people the chance to play sport. Finally, Alive and Kicking ensures that disadvantaged young people have the tools they need to live happy, healthy lives through Alive and Kicking's innovative health education programmes. Mental health problems are common among young people in the countries where the association works. One child in seven suffers from major psychological problems, particularly depression and anxiety. That's why they train youth workers.? Using their award-winning game-based methodology, education is delivered directly through sports training and is proven to have a positive impact on the knowledge, behaviours and attitudes of those who access it. Access. Access. Access. Week one of Next Bigger Better fund going live and the response we've been getting has proved fantastic, with incredible conversations happening around innovation in the sport of cricket. We've already identified key projects. The fund is designed to cut the red tape that slows down other funds and give clubs access to a grant that is focused on "sporting potential" and cricket. Feedback has shown we're in exactly the right space. What's also clear is that "access" is the big word. It comes in different forms. How can clubs or charities help more children access cricket? How can access be more innovative? How can access be more inclusive? How can access be cost effective? What tools do I need to me more accessible? Given this is a pilot, we've focused on 30 clubs in the SE London and Kent region, and we're launching with a minimum viable product, it is clear to see the opportunity is wide and open. You have to be on the ground to see it though, sit too far above it and you'll miss what is important. We're keen to carry on growing beyond the pilot into 2025 and beyond, so if you're a cricket mad brand and want to support the game, do get in touch. “The reality of starting a not-for-profit social venture…………..” ? This isn’t my first rodeo when it comes to raising and securing investment. The difference is the profit from all the products I will be producing for #LetUsPlayFootball will go directly back into grassroots football. Great for the community, not so appealing to your typical investor. ? Despite having a credible business plan, a vision with real social impact and a growing community of supporters, funding through grants and loans has proven to be an uphill battle. One of the biggest frustrations I’ve encountered is the bureaucracy of securing funding. We live in a world where tick-box exercises seem to matter more than viability or credibility. Start-up business loans require trading history, and grants, which while they initially sound promising, come with eligibility criteria that often exclude you from the opportunity. ? Despite these hurdles, I wholeheartedly believe in #LetUsPlayFootball and the powerful social impact it will have on clubs, coaches, parents, and children in the grassroots football community. ?
