Back in August, Brooke Hohfeld, Co-Executive Director of Texas Advocates, joined the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities and AIDPH in a moving discussion on Nontraditional Partners and Creating Legislative Champions. We covered topics including tokenism and ableism, how to center people with lived experiences in disability advocacy, and the successful model employed in Texas by CTD and Texas Advocates to secure committed legislative champions. Will the CJI be more proactive as stated and lead the way in tackling issues highlighted by disability advocacy groups? can we meet him? open house or through any medium? a window of opportunity and also sustaining the momentum , fostering partnerships and collaborations? these will surely facilitate greater access n inclusion by systematically busting myths n stereotypes surrounding disabilities n.persons with disabilities.

Today, in honor of Disability Pride Month, Abled Voices, our employee group supporting those with disabilities, their caretakers, and allies, hosted Taryn (Debold) Lagonigro, co-founder of Extra Lucky Moms. This community provides support, education, and advocacy for parents of children with disabilities, promoting inclusion and empowerment. The session was a chance to come together and learn. One tip I appreciated was: “You can never go wrong by asking someone: ‘What is the right way for me to say this? What would you prefer?’” Asking with genuine curiosity shows care and promotes a judgment-free dialogue. To support coworkers who live with or care for those with disabilities, consider asking how they’re doing or what challenges they face.
