Inspiring essay in The Economist https://lnkd.in/gg4xCGbW about a young woman being liberated through education. I now know Sultana and she is nothing short of incredible. “Sometimes I would get angry and loudly complain that I was forced to cage myself in a burqa. My mother would look at me with a solemn expression, place her hand on my head, and say, “Be someone who can leave this place.” She encouraged me to learn English. And I did. Armed with an iPad, the internet and a free education website called Khan Academy, I taught myself English. And philosophy. And maths. And science. And history. I wanted to understand the world in every way possible, and my place in it. Solving maths problems gave structure to the uncertain world I was living in, even if just in my head. I felt liberated when I first learned to make a graph of a linear equation. On the page, drawing a two-dimensional co-ordinate plane and graphing an equation, the world was in my control.” My favorite part :)

I really admire Sal's work and I have personally watched and liked many of his videos throughout high school and university but really disappointed hearing Sal promoting this type of caricature of women adorning the burqa as being caged and imprisoned.

That’s an amazing story! As the woman says, she felt caged inside a burqa. And, it’s tough for society to accept that it’s normal. Religious norms should be to empower ourselves. And, not to suppress us. Talking about how education changed her life? To read this story, I was highly amazed. Women have the right to independence, an freedom of choice, and, education, etc. You should be able to say what you want without being subjected to slander or libel. And, education gave her the words to speak, perception to see the world, confidence to wear, and a lot more. Thank you for sharing.

Inspiring! We get to see the resilience of a young girl to dream big dreams and then, get to work through to achieving those dreams. Many times, we want different too; different lives, different situations, different outcomes. Now, imagine that hand being placed on your head and hear the words clearly enough, "Be someone who can leave this place." You want better?! Then, by all means, do better! You get to decide if you leave that place you want out from, or not. This is such insightful post to read. Thank you for sharing!

Encouraging story but apart from the Burka title/comment. I know personally many women done excellent in the working field along side raising their children and being grateful of having the sincerity of fulfilling the religious obligation. I would say it is just a personal opinion of a woman or could be many others. It should not be advocated such a way that it is the opinion from majority. We don’t know. I believe there is no correlation between wearing Burka and having education. These are completely two independent things. Let respect individual opinion and let’s not try to paint with the same brush.
