PEACE Summit: Montessori & White Supremacy Culture
We have a problem!!
In a Montessori environment, white supremacy culture could manifest subtly through practices that prioritize conformity, perfectionism, or rigid structures, which contradict Montessori's principles of individual growth, inclusivity, and cultural respect.
Educators should be mindful of unconscious biases, ensuring that all children’s cultural backgrounds are valued, and creating an environment that fosters equity.
Avoiding traditional white supremacy culture hashtags, such as #WhiteLivesMatter or #AllLivesMatter, which might mask privilege, is essential in fostering a diverse, inclusive Montessori community.
As #Montessori practitioners, we are grounded in the liberation of the child from the oppressive systems that constrain their ability to develop as they are trying to do. White Supremacy Culture sustains these oppressive systems that deeply impact the child, the family, and our communities as a whole. And it’s about time we talk about.
Join Mariana and the international, Montessori-trained PEACE team for workshops and discussion about how many of the characteristics of White Supremacy Culture show up in our classrooms, at home, and what we can do about it.
