A new USC study reveals a troubling trend: publicly insured individuals who could benefit the most from new drugs for diabetes and obesity are less likely to receive them compared to those with private insurance. ?? Key Findings: ?? Prescription fills for semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) surged by over 400% from January 2021 to December 2023. ?? These drugs, initially approved for type 2 diabetes and later for weight loss, significantly improve blood pressure and reduce cardiovascular disease risks. ?? Despite their benefits, the majority of prescriptions go to those with private insurance. Impact on Publicly Insured Populations: ?? Medicaid and Medicare Part D populations, who face higher rates of diabetes and obesity, are not accessing these medications at the same rate. ?? This disparity could exacerbate existing health inequities, particularly among Black and Latinx communities.
