Here’s what we presented at #JPM2025.

It was an incredible experience attending the launch event at the House of Lords to mark the 10-year review of the Selecting for Excellence report. Originally released in 2014, this report was developed to address the significant inequalities in the recruitment and retention of students from widening participation backgrounds. Over the past decade, tremendous strides have been made toward creating a more diverse medical workforce. These efforts span impactful policy changes and the growth of outstanding third-sector organizations such as Melanin Medics, led by Olamide Oguntimehin, Medics&Me, led by Megan Pode, and The Aspiring Medic's Support (TAMS) C.I.C, alongside many other initiatives that are driving meaningful progress in widening participation. Importantly, the growing body of evidence underscores that a diverse workforce is not only a moral imperative but also crucial for delivering better patient care. The review highlights how far we’ve come while acknowledging the challenges that remain. I look forward to seeing how stakeholders will act on the new recommendations to further this vital mission. As the profession of ABA continues to adjust to the process of providing services within the healthcare industry, it’s not uncommon to hear people talk about quality services, clinical excellence, and high standards. These are some of my favorite topics! There has been some wonderful articles that speak to what quality services can look like (Silbaugh & Fattal, 2021), but I believe these conversations must continue. This is a subject that needs to stay at the forefront. I appreciate how Chisolm et. al (2012) addressed this by identifying six main areas of what they define as clinical excellence, with additional guidance. And as I thought about the parallels between our two different sciences and services, there are potential applications. The figure below is just a starting point. It’s their definition of clinical excellence overlayed with some of my edits that draw from on our literature base. Hopefully it also serves as an encouragement for you – if you haven’t yet begun to think about how you can operationalize what clinical excellence looks like for you as a provider or an organization, there’s no time better than today to begin. Your families and clients deserve nothing less. ?
