As the profession of ABA continues to adjust to the process of providing services within the healthcare industry, it’s not uncommon to hear people talk about quality services, clinical excellence, and high standards. These are some of my favorite topics! There has been some wonderful articles that speak to what quality services can look like (Silbaugh & Fattal, 2021), but I believe these conversations must continue. This is a subject that needs to stay at the forefront.
I appreciate how Chisolm et. al (2012) addressed this by identifying six main areas of what they define as clinical excellence, with additional guidance. And as I thought about the parallels between our two different sciences and services, there are potential applications.
The figure below is just a starting point. It’s their definition of clinical excellence overlayed with some of my edits that draw from on our literature base. Hopefully it also serves as an encouragement for you – if you haven’t yet begun to think about how you can operationalize what clinical excellence looks like for you as a provider or an organization, there’s no time better than today to begin. Your families and clients deserve nothing less. ?
